Authorities: Man in swim trunks killed by deputy

By ELIZABETH DUNBAR, Associated Press Writers

LE CENTER, Minn.(AP) – State investigators say a plainclothes Minnesota sheriff's deputy fatally shot an unarmed man dressed only in swim trunks.

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said Tuesday that 37-year-old sheriff's Deputy Todd Waldron shot 24-year-old Tyler Heilman on Monday in the southern Minnesota community of Kasota.

The bureau says Waldron is a 10-year law enforcement veteran and that he was driving an unmarked car at the time.

A spokesman for the bureau, Andy Skoogman, says investigators are asking the community to withhold judgment until the facts of the case have been determined. He says Waldron was working on another case when he saw a car driven by Heilman speeding and swerving erratically.

These were all the facts available from my Associated Press source at the time I posted it. And, as I said in the title of the post, I "Can't Wait to Hear The Details Of This."

I have things to do now, but I'll search for more details as I have time.

Here's one side of the story, with pictures. Sounds like Heilman got belligerent and picked a fight with the cop. Also sounds like the cop didn't identify himself. The article is also mostly hearsay from Heilman's friend, so either of those assertions could be wrong.
A little more of the story

And too many times there is reason to be cranky with the cop, some cops are power tripping pricks.
My sister is a paramedic, I used to be a firefighter, my Brother-inlaw and Father-inlaw still are firefighters. Don't think for a minute that cops we see inaction never make mistakes or blunders. What are the chances they are going to drop the charges or say sorry........that's right none.
Some cops are finest people you could ask to meet. Lippy or not to a cop. It's no reason for the cop to shoot you.

While I agree with you--I've met some cops whose only apparent reason to pin on a badge was so they had the legal authority to be the bully they always were--I'm sure there are a lot of folks who will say that the cop was justified to shoot someone for being mouthy. To some extreme "right-wangers," cops are never wrong.

On the other side of the coin, I've known some police officers who were fine human beings. Trouble is, they seemed to be in a tiny minority.

Right...if cops can shoot folks rather than arrest them, our court dockets will be empty in no time. Never mind that BS about rights; if they weren't guilty, the cops wouldn't have these folks in their sights to begin with. So let's just let the cops be judge, jury, and executioner, and save the taxpayers tons of money. After all, no one has ever been falsely accused, falsely arrested, or falsely convicted in America.

And then we can be just like the old Soviet Union. We didn't really need that old constitution anyway.

For some reason, this story won't pass the potty filter...can't understand why. Nothing sectual, nothing obscene, nothing even off-color in the story.

But here's a link:
More Details

Since I cannot edit my post, I will add this.

The cop will perjure himself, his cop buddies will perjure themselves, the county attourney will refuse to press charges.
The cop will get a day or two of restricted duty, and he and his buddies will be free to continue to terrorize and threaten the citizenry once again. And the cop who murdered the man will make the most of his new reputation to threaten the public.

I love these, Cop get a year or two off with full pay while they find him Innocent of any wrong doing.
----------------------------------------
Waldron is on standard paid administrative leave while the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and Le Sueur County Sheriff's Department conduct an investigation.
-------------------------------------------
This is some big time criminal.
------------------------------------------
So far evidence shows four shots were fired.

A records check showed Heilman had 17 convictions in Nicollet, LeSueur and Blue Earth Counties between 2002 and 2008. The crimes range from littering and driving with a suspended license to underage consumption, disorderly conduct, assault and possession of marijuana.

You ought to be ashamed of yourself! The evidence will come out of this and if you have any conscience what so ever you WILL NOT be able to sleep at night. How dare you talk about a father of a three year old little boy like that. Look at the face book page in his memory of him his son is grinning while he is riding piggy back on him. Human life can not be equated to a tax liability. Develop some self dignity and I will pray for you. If all you can think about is you will save some taxes when another human being (unjustifiably and without warning being) shot point blank in front of children you need all of the prayers you can get.

Been a couple cases nearby where a police officer has been dragged by a suspect in a car. In one case, the officer's parter had to shoot the driver or he woulda been scraped off a fire hydrant. I believe in both cases it was gang related and in the city.

several years ago over here, MP's shot and killed a guy that tried to run over them while they were challenging him. The bleeding hearts had a hayday with it and pulled the ole police brutality thing. Was it excessive force? Maybe, but who's life is worth more, the nut trying to run you over or the authority trying to protect the rest of the population?
Could they have done something different? Maybe.... Will other people think twice and probably decide against attempting to run through a checkpoint? If they are smart... This nut may not have had much clothes on, but could have had an infected needle or himself been infested w/ aids... In the cops place, would any of you that are squaling about how bad cops are have done anything different? Probably not unless you's just plain ignant.

Maybe you've been outside the States long enough to not know this, but even the police themselves will tell you: they are not here to protect us. Their job is simply to react after an incident occurs, not to protect citizens from incidents occurring. They are investigators, not protectors. Judges can issue "protective orders" barring potentially bad people from coming into contact with potential victims, such as in the case of acrimonious divorces and such. But the police have no power to actually protect the innocent until an incident occurs. By then damage is done, and at best all the police can do is try to prevent the damage from getting worse.

So the idea of the police as protector is a myth. And "coulda" and "woulda" are not justification for taking the life of anyone. I mean, I "coulda" been a serial killer, except for the fact that I chose not to follow that path. I "coulda" been a rapist, but I chose not to become one. Would that cop be justified to kill me simply because I "coulda" chosen a life of crime and "coulda" left a trail of bodies behind? I certainly hope not! The KKK lynched lots of innocent blacks over the years because they "coulda" been guilty of something. So let's not reopen that door.

It seems to me that the cop was a long ways in the wrong on this one.
For anyone that thinks otherwise, ask yourself what you'd have done if you were being chased by some nut in an unmarked car, and then confronted in an arguement that led to a fight.
If you had any sense you'd be defending yourself.

My brother had that experinece several years ago with an off duty mountie. Granted, my brother passed him on the right on a 4 lane highway because buddy was dogging along in the passing lane. Mr mountie took that to heart and proceeded to give chase a 90 mph in his own vehicle, flashing his lights and driving like a nut.
He finally caught my brother at an intersection in the town and wasn't too pleasd about having been outrun by a Hyundai....
Only at that point did my brother realize that he was dealing with a mountie as he still had his uniform on... but had he been anyone else, given the way he behaved, or in plain clothes, he'd have been planted in the asphalt, right there.

This one doesn't sound too much different.
Mr. Cop should have identified himself immediately and shown his badge, IMMEDIATELY. Otherwise, he's just some john dick looking for a fight... which he got, and got gotten.
I hope the $hit hits the fan over that. It should.

A couple of yrs. ago in Del. the cops shot a guy full of holes sitting on a front porch. The guy was at a house, where the owner had been arrested. He was a friend of the owner. The cops, that were watching the house came up on the guy. Witnesses stated, the man was just sitting there, on the porch, when the cops rushed up on him with weapons drawn. Cops yelled for the man to take his hands out of his pockets. That's when one of the cops shot the man with a tazer, as he's getting shocked, cops are screaming for him to take his hands out of his pockets. As he was being electricuted, he could not respond properly. That's when one of the cops shot him several times, killing him. The man had no weapons on him. After a few months, and a supposed "Police Investigation" the cop was cleared, no problem. The man they murdered was U.S Marine vet, who had just returned from Iraq a few months back. Last I heard, the mans family was going to take the police to court. They had a half a dozen witnesses to this murder, but that triggerhappy cop is on the streets today.

What probably amazes me the most about this post is that some of you who are bemoaning this man's death are the exact same people who preach SSS and that if you ever caught someone in your house stealing something you would shoot them dead on the spot.

I am in no means saying the cop was justified but we do know that the victim was at least agressive toward the cop. If the guy went for the cops gun in the struggle then the cop has justification for shooting him. In terms of the number and placement of shots, the first thing taught at the academy is center mass and until movement stops. The whole idea of shooting them in the leg etc is made for tv bullcrap.
