need some help. do I have to pull the rear axle to replace the retainer and felt on the 45 A I'm restoring? The A has a powertrol on it and what do i run into removing it? Seems as though it can be done from the outside, although I'm sure the retainer will be damaged.

If you are leaking oil at the ends of the axle housing, the seal that's causing the problem is located behind the bull gear in the axle housing. The felt at the end of the axle only keeps dirt out the bearing, not seal in oil. The entire cover can be easily removed from the axle housing, but it's heavy. You will need a way to support it. Removing the axles to get at the seal is pretty straightforward. Remove the wheels, then loosen the axle nuts and use a wedge between the axles to push the axle out of the bull gears. When re-assembling, adjust the axle bearings to .001-.004" end play. Some guys adjust them to just take out all end play. Either way will probably be OK. May as well replace the felts while you are at it.
