Ford 800 troubleshooting

Last year we purchased a Ford 800 series tractor. When we’ve tried to use the tractor this year we found it wouldn’t keep going. We drained all the fuel and replaced it. After starting it, it seemed to run about 30 minutes just fine. We put our brush hog on and it ran for a few minutes but then it stalled again. There’s an adjustment screw at the bottom of the fuel tank. When the brass screw is closed and opened it seems to run fine in idle but if you try to throttle up the gas goes once again. We did notice that the shut off valve in the gas line leaks a little when it’s open. We have no idea if there are fuel screens that may be clogged or where those would be located. Having very limited knowledge about tractors, any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

To me it sounds like the bottom of the tank may be a little trashy and some it is stopping up the outlet. It moves around a little and lets the gas out but soon it gravitates to the outlet and restricts the flow. The trash may be so large that it doesn't pass through into the sediment bowl. I think you're looking at removing the tank and doing a proper clean out. If the tank problems are rust, you may want to look at a liguid sealer. Lots of places carry these kits like Caswells or Eastwood.

Yep it has a screen in there or should have. Those fuel shut offs are a problem on those tractors also so once open you should leave it that way or sooner or later you will be replacing it. As for your problem the momnet it dies on you check the spark. It should be a blue white spark that will jump a 1/4 inch gap. If it does not do that and looks yellow you have a spark problem not a fuel problem. Now if the spark is good then open up the main jet adjustment screw a little at a time till you have the power you want either one or both can/will cause your problem

There is a screen in the tank and a flat screen in the fuel filter.Thats a shut off screw at the bottom of the tank.1 turn open is all you need. The air vent in the top of the tank can be plugged. You should have a vented cap on the tank.

Ryan, I agree that it is probably dirt etc. on the bottom of your tank plugging the screen inside the tank. I have had very good luck "vacuuming" tanks out with a siphon, working it around the bottom until the gas comes out clean. My lawyer insists that I include the obvious precautions about being careful to keep the gasoline safely contained and k away from sources of ignition.
