boat motor I know O/T

I ask here because I can't seem to find the answers elsewhere
I have a Mercury 500 50hp outboard and need a lower unit I found one but it is a short shaft. I need to know if all the 500s are the same in regards to the lower unit and can't seem to find the info online. If you know somewhere I can find out or someone who can answer let me know.

Used to work on Johnsons and Evinrudes. Not familiar with Mercs but these people will know.

You might find a group if you go to the Yahoo site and search the groups. Also try googling mercury lower units.

Roy- Get me a serial # off your engine and then I can cross all possibilities for lower unit compatibility. I know that all of the lower units for the older Merc 500 are no longer available from Mercury. E-mail [email protected]

Try Laing's Outboards. He may have what you are looking for. I bought a lower unit for my 73 Mercury 200 (20 hp) from him. Would recomend him as he treated me right.

I will but just to let you know I went ahead and bought the other engine only $40 and when I called another marine shop they asked if mine was a red or blue stripe and the parts one was red like mine. even if it don't work I have some good parts I can sale. I would like to know more info on it.
