Rip off from G.M dealer.

Repaired a lot of things on the 706 cab & sheet metal. loader mtg brackets, etc. Don"t mind it at all but my-O -my when it comes to buying parts, reasonable cost is expected. I really dislike the way some I.H dealers gouge and smile when they think they have you at a disadvantage,
so now its the G.M dealer.Have a G.M.C.Yukon (really Nice) that the passenger side window switch would only raise the window. Driver had to lower it from his side . My son took the switch out, called the G.M dealer and they wanted to know the vin #,like that window switch was just made for that vehicle. Well gave em the vin #and they looked up the part. Guess what? $104.00
for the whole console with the switch.
Took it apart on the table, removed the switch, took the switch apart, dressed down the points, put a touch of Di-electric grease on the points, checked it with volt ohm meter. worked fine. My son re- installed the panel and low and behold, It WORKS, Pays to do it your self.
Kept the Executives bonuses down a little.
After all, they can"t make it on the millions
from the bail out money we are paying for.Like the sign says"Experience isn"t expensive, It"s
Priceless". LOL

My thoughts exactly---I bet if you check you will find CHINA written on the switch.
Unbelievable how many problems are caused by CHINESE electronics on automobiles and other items.
I have done many electrical repairs on American and Japenese products with Chinese parts. Who would have ever thought the Japanese would use Chinese parts on their products??

Today we don't have mechanics that can make repairs, we have technicians who are there to diagnose problems and replace parts. Some of these technicians can't fix a sandwich.

I bought a $5,000 set of hearing aids so far they have been in shop more than in my ears. A little bit of dust or sweat and they quit working.
I don't know what to do after the warranty is off. they said I could give them back if I wasn't satisfied for $100 I am seriously thinking of doing that right now.
What good are they if they can't stand a little dust or sweat. Like I don't wear them in doors all the time.

My brother called last night saying that they wanted $600 to install a set of plug wires and a coil pack.

He wondered if maybe this was a bit excessive. :>)

Jiles, I can relate to that right now. Yesterday I had a recall done for the compressor start relay on my refrigerator. I wonder if they designed the contacts too light to save a few cents and then it ended up costing them millions in recalls. Anyway this morning we noticed water on the floor by the refrigerator. They fixed it until it broke.) The ice cubes were melting etc so we put the food in our freezer and the camper refrigerator. The serviceman came right out this morning and replaced the relay again and now it appears to be working OK again. What a pain in the azz for everybody. About a year ago we had a defrost problem on the same refrigerator and I replaced that circuit board myself. Searching out on the Internet, it looks like a gizillion other people had the same problem. Besides the expense, it is the inconvenience of the problem.

Had about the same problem on our Allis 8775 the range switch would go down but not back up. several hundred to buy the whole shift lever but I fixed a cold solder joint for about a half hours worth of time. Works like a champ just wish these new tractors wouln't have so much electric crap in them.

Fuel guage don't work on another one something in the dash module sending unit is good and the guage has power to it but won't read. Grrr.

Was asked ,if I fixed it myself, how did G.M.rip me off? Well if i wasn"t able to do the fixing,I would have to buy the whole Da## console. Now thats a rip off. Most people just cant repair any thing, so out comes the check book, and still ,after buying the part , it won"t work. Now you have Mechanics fees, plus parts, plus state& federal taxes , ond most likely lots of numerious return trips to the dealer who is MILES AWAY from your home. In 1969 I bought a NEW CHEV CARRYALL. Lots of horror stories I can tell ya. But it would take up this entire forum.ALl goes back to the saying"once burnt ,twice shy" Now I will state ,there are one whole lot of smart people on this site who can fix a lot of things, and has the kindness in their hearts TO SHARE their knowledge.
Guess the fellow who asked the question would be most likely to be burnt more then once.

It"s gonna get worse. I own an independant repair shop. We seem to be taking the same hit or even worse than a consumer. I have an expensive job locked on a hoist cause trans cooler lines are a week out. This is a 2000 escort, pretty basic stuff. Two weeks ago I couldn t get a flywheel for a dodge cummins, had to go used. Parts prices keep climbing and I can t pass it all on to the customer and stay affordable.

We buy some of our parts from dealerships but alot from the same vendors that supply OEM parts. These vendors are the ones that have taken a big hit with GM and Chrysler tanking. Ford is in the same boat. The suppliers only recourse is to keep raising prices to stay above water.

I m not complaining cause I still have work to do, but who would of ever thought I d have an easier time sourcing parts for the Acura, Lexus, and Honda I m working on than a 00 escort or 96 dodge 1 ton..

Maybe this is just part of the change we were promised..

You can always write to the CEO of GM at

Washington, D.C.

Just think, as part of the restructuring agreement, the NEW Govenment Motors will NO longer stock parts for any of their vechicles made before 12 July, 2009.

That is along the line of the jobs won't come back to the USA. Somebody comment that they would just outsource to the next cheapest country. China has so many people and doesn't care how they make a product or what they do to get it out that they'll probably be the cheapest for a long time, so the Japanese outsource to them.

i retired from a gm dealer in 05,the gm parts catalog is set up to only being up parts for a VIN number.less wrong parts ordered,(right part the first time).also i think in 02 or 03 thay started to code VIN numbers in to window swithces, so when we would install a new electronic part(radio, window switch, door lock switch,ac control and more)we would have to go in to computer and let it know of the new part.

I'm 23. Born with severe hearing loss. Some spend only an average of 20 years with hearing aids. I get to spend 80 years.

Getting back to IH, I just picked up a new drive head for the end of the sickle in an IH sickle mower, and it cost a little over $60. It's just a little cast strap about ten inches long. Jim

I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN. SAME GOES FOR OTHER THINGS TOO, I NEEDED A NEW LIGHT SWITCH ON THE DOOR OF MY FRIDGE LAST WEEK, WAS 55.00 AND WOULD HAVE HAD TO PAY AND THEN WAIT 3 WEEKS TO GET IT,SO I TOOK THE OLD SWITCH OUT,CLEANED THE CONTACTS AND PUT IT BACK IN,WORKS GOOD. ON SOME HOUSES IVE RENTED FOR THE PAST 25 YEARS, I USED TO GET PLUMBING AND AC REPAIRS DONE, NOW ,IT WOULDNT BE WORTH IT TO RENT IF I DONT DO THE REPAIRS MYSELF. JUST PUT A NEW ROOF ON ONE OF THEM MYSELF.SOMETHING I WOULD HAVE NEVER DONE UNTILL ROOFING JOBS MORE THAN TRIPLED OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS.I KEEP VEHICLES THAT I CAN FIX, SEE PEOPLE GETTING NOT TO SERIOUS WORK DONE AND PAY BIG BILLS FOR IT.TRUE IVE HAD TO GET A 500.00 SCANNER FOR THEM ,BUT HAVE SAVED 10 TIMES THAT USEING IT.IM NOT PUTTING DOWN TRADESMEN ,I KNOW HOW OVERHEAD CAN BLEED A BUISINESS. I HATE TO SAY IT,BUT THINK THINGS ARE GOING TO GET WORSE ,I USED TO BE PRETTY OPTOMISTIC ABOUT SUCH THINGS. LUCAS

What do you expect from GM (Government Motors) when it is run by overpaid civil servants, who dont work hard enough to wear out a pair of shoes in 10 years, and expect life-time pensions, medical, dental, vision care, etc. etc. Tom

No I have not been burnt at all. I was a parts and service manager at a GM dealership for several years. The switch is not in the console it is on the drivers door. Sounds like youre kind of cooking up your story to fit it into your rant.

Is it GM's fault that you live MILES AWAY from the dealership?

I still can't see where you were ripped off. Seems like alot of anger over fixing your own switch without the dealer being involved.

Well MSJ from Mn. Can tell that you aren"t familiar with Yukon passenger door console. If you were, you would know there is rocker switches on the panel. One for Lock And one for windows. If you were a parts mgr-service mgr or what ever, I am sure that the dealership would be in great peril. I know parts changers and so called technicians who couldnt figure up from down.Sounds like to me you fit in that catagory of let the customer beware. The days of a TRUE MECHANIC has all but faded into oblivion and those left to fill the bill are nothing but Parts changers at best. From your reply. I can see why your not a parts /service mgr any more. Best look on your computer for a 99 Yukon at see there is a window/lock combination on the passenger side. Other wise maby you can take a refresher course from GOVERNMENT MOTORS!!!

Ya, that company is 60% owed by the U.S. Government. Call your Representative and complain, I'm sure things will get better in the future.

Former proud GM car owner.

Depending on the year, the door switches on Suburban, Tahoe, and C-K trucks there is a module in the switch.
Now to play devil's advocate, if the tech at the dealer took it apart and cleaned the contacts and it worked for a few days then quit again, would you not be upset? The tech gets paid to fix it once. If it doesn't stay fixed, he gets to work on it for free until it is fixed.
When it comes to labor, I have easily $75,000 wrapped up in tools and equipment. That's why labor costs what it does.

Fisrt off the console is in the center of the vehicle not on the door. If you doubt me go to the dealer and look at the parts catalog.

What true mechanic or parts replacer as you call it are you talking about? It does not say anywhere in your post that a technician did you any wrong.

It has to be tough going through life so angry at everyone.
