how to fix/adjust voltage reg.?

How does one adjust/repair a voltage regulator?
This is one on my JD720, took generator all apart, cleaned armature, brushes have good spring tension. Tried polarizing VR. nothing so far. Gen is pushing 13-14v. Local TSC has new VR's but they are made in India, and are $40, doesnt seem like a very good deal..any thoughts?
Thanks.

John T - Got the JD 420c charging..bad battery was the cause..thanks for the help.

Clean all the terminals on the reg and be sure that it has a good ground and you will be alright. Also clean the contacts too.

several good posts in the archives helped me get mine going

I prefer voltage meter with needle, if your setup was like my MF you ground the field post on gen and should get max output, good output that way clears the gen

make sure contacts in VR are clean, points file or even a rough business card, make sure they are clean afterwards

should be 2 relays inside vr, with engine at very fast idle fiddle with them until meter maxes, that is one to adj, other one is cutout

slowly adjust tension screw while watching meter, usually very small adjustment, putting cover on will change things a bit

my vr was conking out after it heated up so I got good reliable pakistani one, no india junk for me

It's the generator windings that get polarized, not the regulator.
How did you adjust the cutout ?
You need a voltmeter to set the voltage regulator, the dash meter is an ammeter.

My (and other) posts on voltage regulator adjustment are more of a warning. Get an old automotive electrical book and have at it using the procedure in the book. There is real financial danger in poorly adjusted regulators.
