urea diesel in GM

Will significantly improve fuel consumption. Pretty much allows you to meet Tier IV with Tier II equipment plus the additional particulate trap by using urea. Takes care of the NOx element. Downside is you need to buy a urea based solution. Since it will freeze you need to somehow heat the tank when the temperature gets low. The alternative is to pump in more cooled EGR which is volumetrically inefficient and makes "good" combustion diffficult. Might be easier to make computer changes which will inactivate the crap, without screwing up the whole combustion system but I'm sure it will hard to fool the computer so it doesn't show at the dealer.

Further remark: You are likely aware that urea is very corrosive, so using it will require a lot of expensive stainless steel or ceramic coated elements.

Almost all on and off road diesels will use the DEF 'Diesel Exhaust Fluid'. GM, Ford, Dodge will use it. Fuel economy will not improve over 2008, 09 levels as the particulate filter will still be required. DEF cost will be based on Urea prices worldwide. It is basicaly urea fertilizer mixed with distilled water. Just another goverment mandate that that is a tax increase. Below is a link to an artical on how the system will work on Dodge pickups.
Urea Injection

This is the first I have heard of this and from what I read on the link provided, it is going to be in liquid form. Are people going to have to put just normal 28% liquid in the little tank or what? If every diesel drive'n soccer mom has to fill up with liquid urea, whats that going to do to the price of urea, 28%, NH3, ESN, ect?

after reading the artice ,its a good thing i refuse to buy poorer quality new trucks, my old ones just keep running and running, when they do break its usually a fairly simple fix, the newest pickup on the place is about to turn 16, the new stuff works great, .. when it works, when it doesnt which seems to be often, its a expensive nightmare to get it going, some of my friends used to laugh at me for not trading up now since their new trucks spend half the time in the dealers shop they quit doing that

I knew there was a reason I am keeping that old Dodge.
Refuse to put dog pee in my engine then have to work on it.

(quoted from post at 23:27:47 07/14/09) you have the EPA to thank for this goat f$ck

I agree. The EPA (and govt in general) will not be happy until they regulate every last inch of our lives. The US has the cleanest environment on the planet. I say enough is enough. All these regulations do is add cost and complexity to our vehicles and require more govt employees (i.e. non-productive people) to monitor our compliance with these rules.

Well at least the international trucks will not use the urea, their able to reduce their emissions by EGR and the muffler regenerate. this is past 2010 also.

Good POINTS , Look at the Chrysler link that is part of this discussion ,, ,The urea is injected into exhaust, and does NUT'hin' to improve performance ..... guys,..... OK...My QUESTION to the EPA and Gov'mt' meddlers ,,, WHAt ya' gonna do about ALL the nasty jet airplanes , POLLUTING THE AIR ,,GUZZLIN ALL THE FUEL ,, FLYING GOV'MT' BIG WIGS all over GODS creation so they can keep an eye on US ,,, And more likely than not , Jet Planes , with all the turbulance created by slicin ' thru the atmosphere at 500 mph at 30 K plus ft,.. it is very probable ,, THAT JET AIRPLANES are the real culprit behind ALLEGED climate change ,,, They certainly help free Trade with ChinX and NAFTA put the SHAFTA to the American economy and Working Man in this Blessed Country..... i would applaud the groundin' of the Jets ,,, if anything Just So that we can have OUR OWN ECONOMY back and not be a part of the Global Goat fuss........

Unreal - I just bought an '06 Dodge Ram 3500 ensuring it had the Cummins 5.9 engine. I researched before shopping and decided to avoid the new 6.7 engine after reading the horror stories by people who had bought them. They said the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) and associated monitoring/computer systems cause these trucks to live in the shop. I can only imagine the nightmares this new emission system will give customers. Hope my 5.9 lasts for 500k miles!

As much as I go to the bathroom.I could fill that eight gallon tank in no time. I feel sorry for the diesel techs in the future. Wizz in your tank. What is the world coming to.

From the article:

"Sensors can determine the composition of the DEF added to the truck, so substitutes like pure water or (ahem) pee can’t be used. The truck will know. It will also detect if you try to mix agricultural-grade urea and demineralized water to brew a homemade batch of DEF."

What the? Why on earth would it matter? Are they going to start dying urea fertilizer now too?

I'm certain somebody took a long hard look at the urea and tired to make a case for extra security. As the stuff could "somehow be made to go "boom".
The aftermarket does a prosperous business making particulate filter bypass pipes. And custom software to allow engine operation without failure codes. With the urea tank empty and the filter missing.
