As I mentioned last week my grandfather (88 years old) Died 7-3-2009. Born Dec6th, 1920.

He was in the US Navy in 1944,1945. He never saw action as he was waiting to invade Japan. Then sent home in 1945.

There was a 21 gun salute at the cemetery, 7 old timers firing 3 rounds each...All from the VFW.

The minister that read the sermons, prayers and comments knew my grandfather for over 50 years cause he worked for my granddad at a gas station that he owned. This minister says he remembers that the gas station was full service (remember that) check tires, check oil, clean windshields and fill up the tank. (there are no full service stations anymore that I know of)
My grandfather was run out of business in the 1960's when the oil companies ran the little guys out. My grandfather would pick up gasoline in Toledo Ohio and then bring it up to his station just north of Detroit. In the Early 70's my granddad started a waste oil business and then he retired in the early 80s.

The best thing I can say about my granddad is how God describes Job in the old testament:----
The very last verse of the book of Job says that Job was blessed with children and grandchildren to the 4th generation and Job died at the age of 140 and he died old and full of years.

My grandfather got to see all his grandchildren grow up--14 grandkids and the youngest grandchild is 31, and he and my grandmother have 23 great grandchildren. My grandmother is still alive and is also 88. (if my grandmother lives another few years she will see Great Great grandchildren)

I dont comment often,But from what i have read about your Grampa in your posts, he was a great man. Deepest condolences GG.

Your grandpappy was part of what I call the GI Generation. They were born in the Twenties, grew-up in the Thirties and went off to war in the Forties. They are dying by the hundreds everyday. There will never be another generation like them with their values, morals, intregity, strong will and devotion to country. You are blessed having known him over all those years.

Gun Guru,
My condolences to you and your family. Sounds like he lived a mighty fine life by the way you posted your memories. I'd like to go one over MGTPa and call them the Greatest Generation (Tom Brokaw) for the things they endured and from which they prospered.

Son of an 87 year old WW-II and Korea Army veteran and proud member of the Sons of the American Legion. For what it's worth, I was 1-2 years too young for Vietnam but now have a nephew training in the Marines.

I echo these sentiments. Condolenses.

Sorry for the loss of your grandfather.

I loved both my grandfather and my father.

Lost my father 2 years ago and still miss him.

He was one month short of 88 years.

Sorry to hear of your loss. My grandfather died in 1991. He was 90 when he died. Unfortunately he had alzimers, pretty much out of it the last 4 years. These oldtimers really saw a lot - the world went from horses and mules to spacecraft in their lifetime.

Hey Guru, that 21 gun salute and Taps is enough to get a big burly man teared up,ain't it?

Sorry for your loss ol' pal! Sounded like a good man.

I'm Sorry. We just buried my 96 year old grandfather in Chilhowie, Virginia, in a 5 Generation confederate graveyard.

Our Grandfathers were the same age, just lost mine in March, know how you're feeling. At least they got to live good long lives and enjoy seeing their families grow and prosper. Doesn't make it much better for us who are grieving for them, though.

Condolences to you and your family.

My grandfather was almost 101 when he died. Besides the personal loss, we are losing a vast amount of "how to" knowledge" with every elderly person that departs this earth.

At least my granddad did not have Altzhimers, (spelling error) he was totally coherent up till the last few hours.

I went to see him in the hospital the first week of June. I talked with him for a 1/2 hour or so. We talked about the great depression and he was shocked an stupified that GM was in bankruptcy. We also talked about WW2 and the banks in the 1930's. Lots or history with him, His parents, my great grandparents did okay in the great depression as they owned a small farm and had jobs then. My great grandfather worked for a Nash motor car factory in the 20's and 30's and in WW2 it became a factory that made airplanes or plane parts, not sure.

I did get to see him a lot when I was a kid, (talking grandfather) probably 1 time a month. (then less as I get older) and then the last 10 years it was holidays and few birthday and stuff, about 4 times per year.
