What a year for hay!!

Some really good hay yields here,if you can deal with Mother Nature!! Just finished baling and wrapping 227 4x4's of first year red clover/alfalfa from 19 acres. New John Deere 468 baler has scales which made out these bales to be 1400lbs each. First year making baleage,so really hope this works.Cooler than normal weather so,in spite of the late season, all hay still standing still looks good, even the timothy stands.

That is good. That should make for a a lot of cheap priced hay this year.Guys will be cutting their prices to get rid of it.

Guys that didn't follow the herd and tear everything up to put in corn last year made out ok on hay. Maybe this year things will equalize with a good hay season and corn production more or less back to normal (whatever that is).

when handleing hay wet, either wrapped wet bales or chopped for silage you need to figure moisture out. then you calculate tons of dry matter per acre to get your yield.

don't know what moisture he baled at, but yield was more like 3t/acre. just guessing on that.

Good for you, we are stuck in drought and my yields have been 1/2 or less than normal. Even the "good" fields are at 1/3 or less. Will be lucky to get any second crop at all.

Gordo -
I know that seems real high, but our haybines (479&488) couldn't handle it at all. Neighbour ended up using his discbine instead. Still have another 30 acres of the same to do.

Most years I would have been done by now but with all the rain we keep having I'm about a month behind. Mind you we are not getting a lot of rain just enough to make it hard to get any hay cut with out it getting wet

Yeah, I'm getting record hay yield this year, but every bit of it has been rained on except for the stuff I cut too early at the end of May. The last time we had 3 straight days without rain was over a month ago now. I've had hay on the ground almost every day since then. The best part was when the the 5-day forecast said no rain for 4 days. I cut down about 30 acres so it rained for 4 days instead.

Yep rained here on the 4th and the 5th again not much but enough that if I had hay down it would have been wet. I did get some put up a week or so ago but it was almost to wet to bale because of how humid it has been. Pretty bad when you have to bale at the hottest part of the day or the hay get to wet to bale. I tried to bale some around 7pm and it was way to wet from the humidity so I had to wait till the next day to finish it up. Oh well at least I still have half the hay I put up last year so if I don't get any put up I'll get by this winter
