Farmall A clutch and PTO problem

I just pulled a PTO off a Farmall A to use on my 140. Of course after I did that I found it won"t work because the A"s outer sleeve and probably something else is not the same as the 140. I put a back plate on the A and refilled with oil. Anyway, the problem now is that without the PTO in there, the A grinds it"s gears and won"t go in gear. I am not sure if this problem was there before I took the PtO off or not. I guess I am wondering if the PTO has to be on the A for it to shift properly. Don"t see why but can that be what is going on here? I don"t see how I could have done any damage by just pulling the PTO off. -John

The issue is the PTO acted as a brake. Its turning force requirements when not in use, allowed the trans to stop when the clutch was down. Unless your clutch is dragging (1" freeplay at platform)for adjustment) or has a dry/gummed up pilot bearing, the only solutions are patience, to let it spin down, or use 90-140 oil in the trans to reduce spindown time. It helps to put pressure foreward of reverse where there is no gear, then move it over to low with the pressure on.

Thanks. It absolutely does not spin down. Ever. Spins away as though the clutch is not even there. Could the clutch be frozen with rust as I am thinking now? Seems like a coincedence that just removing the PTO would aloow this. I am not talking that it grinds going into gear, I am talking it will not go nto gear period. -----John

Could the ckutch be frozen also from lack of use? Starting it in gear maybe to jar it? Sprat with penatrating oil if I can get some up there? I want to think the clutch is frozen to the pressure plate. I hope not. Another way is to put the darn PTO back in? I can't use it anyway as the 140 outer sleeve is different anyway. Thanks-John
