sears auto center

Went to sears last nite to get 4 new tires put on the plow truck. Pretty much all went bad. Ordered tires on the 18th. Told they would be in on the 25th. Called them on the 26th. Two different people told me they were not in. Called them on the 29th. They told me tires came in on the 25th. By now I've had enough but carried on. Dump truck off at 4:15, go to supper with wife. Back to store at 6:00. They hadn't even started because they were afraid of twisting off 1 lug bolt. I told them do it. they told it would cost 50.00 to replace. told them not to replace. Told me I couldn't leave with 1 broken stud. Nicely explained to them that I doubt they were gonna' stop me. I offered to twist it off for them then they wouldn't be liable. Guy mumbled that I still wouldn't be able to leave. Ended up getting 3 mounted and hauled the 4th one home. Yes, I probably should have split at the first sign of trouble, but they would have charged a restock fee. Also I would have wasted a 40 mile drive 1 way

I"t product liability: they"re afraid of getting
sued, if your wheel falls off.
A local K-mart auto center did a brake job on a
little old lady"s car, honed the wheel cylinders,
put in kits. She hit the brakes at a stoplight
outside the store, and the brakes failed, and she
coasted into the intersection and got t-boned,
totaled her car-- a wheel cylinder failed.
Now, here, K-mart would only put in new wheel
cylinders.

It used to be that Sears wasn't a half-bad place to go for service, especially if you got in a pinch on the weekend when every place else was closed. Not anymore.

I don't know which is worse: Sears being afraid to break a lug bolt, or Discount Tire, where they seem to think they did something wrong if they managed to change four tires without busting a bolt. Of course, anyone smart enough to light up an acetylene torch can get any lug nut off without breaking the bolt.

I like to give my business to the independent tire shops. My local shop beats the chain stores' prices anyway.

The difference is that years back the folks in back doing the work had probably been raised on a farm, helped in their faimilies business, or done some type of work to gain "experience"

What a novel idea, experience.

Now all these pimple faced kids know is how to look at a video screen.

We are raising a new generation of idiots.

I would love to hire someone to do odd jobs around the farm. Trouble is if I have to stand over them and show them every step to take, why bother.

Stay away from Sear's. They charge about double and take about 3 times as long to change a tire as a tire shop will. Also broke a hubcap on pickup and negelected to tell me. I'm through.

The last time we took the War Dept.'d Durango in to have two tire put on it the good Hal Tech tire gauge that WAS IN THE GLOVE BOX grew legs and walked . And i watched the guy put the lug nuts on and he did not torque them correctly and when i said something to the store manage he said that his people were trained pro's and i laughed in his face and when they brought the Durango out i litterly durg the store manager out and said now if thess lug nuts are torqued to 95 ft. lbs i'll kiss your arres and got my torque wrench out and showed him that 100 Ft. lbs would not break them loose and it took over 147 ft. lbs to break them loose. Or the fight i had at a Wal Marts on patching a hole in a tire one time as they told me that they had to put a new tire on because they were not allowed to patch a hole that big from a sheet metal screw .

My wife took her car to Sears because I was on the road. They did manage to change the tires ok. They even cleaned out the car for her. Took her change box and four of her tapes.Never went back.

What do you think will happen when someone is stuck alongside a road and unable to get the wheel off with the little toy lug wrench the vehicle comes equipped with, and that person gets run over or robbed/ raped because they are stranded there due to the lug nuts being over torqued? I am surprised this hasn't happened as yet.

I think you should have told them where to put their tires and I would have refused to pay any restock fee. What could they do, hold you at gunpoint?

Unfortunately, chains like Sears can't take any chances because our "sue-happy" society is just waiting to nail them. It's sad to say that we have created our own troubles that we are now dealing with. "We" meaning the country in general. Bob

Dumbazzes need to invest in some torque sticks...they're not perfect, but they're better than just crankin' 'em down until the impact wrench quits turning.

Man these are "Horror" stories. We have two local tire shops and a miriad of small one and two or more shops. I deal exclusively with "Big O" tire store. Products are very good and national Brands can be had if you want, on a 1 day order basis. My Car,Trucks[2-1 tons] and RV Trailer all have Big O tires on them. Service is Nation wide and excellent. Warranty can't be beat, good people to do buisness with and I am not a paid voice for them.LOL Jh

Absolutely certain that no Sears Autocenter would have a torch on hand.

We've got a chain of tire stores out here called Les Schwab Tire Centers. Absolutely the best. Guys run out to your car when you pull in, and the place is absolutely #@$% and elbows- very fast, and every bay has a click torque wrench, with which they make the final torquing. They even adjust it to the size of the lug for larger rigs. Rotate your tires for free. Fix your flats for free if its their tire (or a brand that could be their tire- they never make you show proof of purchase). They'll do tractor tires, construction equipment, have road service as well. Will come to your farm, and will probably be there by the time you get off the phone and back out to the field.

Les Schwab was a farmer from Prineville, OR who got tired of shabby tire stores, back in late '50's- built up a chain of at least a hundred stores all over the northwest. Wildly successful, and deservedly so.

I go to Belle Tire around here. Pretty good service. Sears hasn't been in the repair business around here for 20 years.

On every vehicle I have, I now take the tires and wheels completely off the vehicle and bring them in for them to put tires on. I'm tired of them breaking hub caps, putting the wheels on so tight a gorilla can't take them off or, twice now, when they lift up the vehicle, they smash a fender or body panel. Of course, when it happens they won't tell me or if you go back and accuse them they won't admit it.
I've done this for my last four sets of tires and since I started doing it, guess what? I've had no more problems.

Sounds like you're looking for trained farm hands who don't need to be supervised, yet you're wanting to hire kids. I believe you're pretty much going to have to pick one or the other, because these days it's doubtful you'll find both.

Kids who grow up in town aren't usually exposed to farm duties. And a lot of kids who grow up on the farm hear Dad b1tch and complain so much about the lifestyle that the kids don't want to learn how to do something that obviously must be such a pain in the azz, the way Dad rants and raves about it...the long hours, no money in it, stuff always breaking down, high costs and low crop/livestock prices...it's a wonder anyone farms anymore, but I'm darn glad they do!

Serveral years ago around here, a fellow got a flat driving close to an under pass.

He pulled under it , and waited till a good Samaritan came along to offer help. one did and the guy with the flat tire shot and killed the good Samaritan and stole his truck . This was close Pittsburgh.

To my knowledge they never found the killer , they found the truck burned in a strip job.

Got screwed by a Sears tire store back in '69 and I've never been back. They took advantage of me cause I was a kid and didn't know any better. Maybe they've changed in the short forty years since then, but then again maybe not. I do realize the service varies a lot between individual stores.

My entire tire business goes to the local mom-and-pops. Last fall I did a dumb one and replaced the too-wide rear tires on a dually I bought with another set the same size. One of the old ones blew out on the inside sidewall so that should have told they were touching, but it didn't dawn on me. The kid who replaced them didn't notice they were touching either, but a friend of mine did see the touching sidewalls after I'd driven about twenty miles. I went back to the dealer and he exchanged and replaced them with the proper size for just the mounting fee. Now tell me if Sears would have done that!Jim

I had them knock our van off a jack and damage the rocker panel. They called and told me though and just told me to get it fixed and bring them the bill. I did, and they took care of it.

Yeah Les Schwab may not be the cheapest tire store, but they may well be the best around here. Superior service. They refuse to do a half ast job, even if the customer wants them to.

I had a bad experience with Firestone years ago that involved really lousy customer service. I never bought another Firestone tire or did any business with them.

Sears in Clovis NM is about the worst place on earth to get tires put on! They left my lug nuts loose and it ruined lug bolts and a wheel. They refused to take blame or pay for the fixing the lug bolts I had to pay for it and file it against them. Asked them to come down the street where I was stranded to look at it and fix it and they refused. Went back by their store when I got it fixed and their shop manager was total jerk about it saying not their fault? They never paid for it so I pass it on every chance I get that their tire store SUCKS ! Also a store ran by ignorant mexicans !

I took my truck to Walmart once for new tires. The ones on the truck were tube type. They tried to pull the tube out thru the valve stem hole. You would think that after destroying one tube the would learn but they destroyed both of them. They bought me two new tubes, after I discovered the two
they had destroyed.

All my tire business is handled by a father and son business in the small town closest to us. Their prices are reasonable and they know what they're doing. I can ask them really dumb questions and still get useful information. They have repaired many tires for us (Missouri has WONDERFUL county road :>). Sometimes they have done those repairs for what seems to be really low prices, but I think they had a way of knowing that we were hard up for cash at the time. Why go anywhere else?

Christopher

Ditto. And to think, I thought I was the only person who pulled the wheels and tires off and dropped them off. I too have had no issues since doing the same. And it's so simple. Drop them off, tell them you will be back at 5 PM and they are always ready. Gives me a chance to check the brakes, grease the front bearings etc.
My Dad (who's 86 now) asked me to get some tires put on his motorhome last year so I did what I usually do, remove them and drop of the wheels and tires only.

And after I picked them up and got them home, I figured I would paint the wheels silver again.

By the way, he's traveling right now with his lady friend. If you see this little Toyota based motor home around Leesburg Florida in the next few days, tell him his son in South Texas said Howdy!

The tire would not have got changed at my shop either.

If the lug nut would not corporate then I would wait till you made the call,,, and know what the battle plan would b to replace the bad lug nuts and studs

They made the right CALL,,, gave you the option for the correct repair,,, if you did not wanna play and correct the bad nut/stud then it was best to leave it b and let you B responsible for the out come,,, I commend them for their call.

I would like the phone number to this store.

Sears stores around here are going down the tubs. Some don't take in enough to pay the light bills. You would think that they would go to Wal Mart and see how they should run a store.
