Hi everybody. I recently bought a basket case 70 diesel pony start. I am ashamed to say what I have in it now. Anyway when engaging the pony starter, it would grind like crazy. This is my 1st experience with this type of starter. This can't be normal. There is probably something wrong. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks Fred W.

The ring gear or starter gear MAY be bad or the pony's clutch may be stuck or need adjusting so the gears mesh before the clutch engages.

Post over at the DEERE Forum... the GURUS will be over there!

Clutch and brake adjustment. Sticking linkage. Blown bearings, worn "over running clutch" and as previously stated. The pinion gear may need replacing and the flywheel ring gear flipped over.

Fred, just so you don't feel too bad. I have a 730D and have over $13K in it and it still has a few small things that could be fixed up. With the prices of old iron right now I figure that's about 4 or 5 K over what it would fetch. Looks mighty pretty out in the barn though.
