Ford 172 engine help

Hi, just found this site and glad I did. . I usually get old equipment since I do not have money. and I could use help from people who know about old equipment and tractors.
I bought a old water pump with a ford 172 gas engine. When I got it it ran great. The wiring was in need of help so I rewired it everything seems to work fine. I moved it out to the field to start to see if it would pump water. Thats when the problems started. I had to jump the starter cellinoide to get it to start. The starter button does not work. Once I got it running it ran fine and was pumping water. I had to move the pump to get it stable and must have hit some wires or something. After starting, it started to miss and run on 3 cylinders. I checked the wires and plugs. Put a new set of wires, plugs, roter, dust cap, and distributer cap. now its missing and backfiring. I thing I must have crossed a wire. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRICIATED. I need to get water to my trees there is no rain insight for another week. :(

Did you bump the distributer when you moved it and knock the timing off? That would explain the backfiring but not firing on one cylinder. A dirty carb could also make it backfire. It is easy to play with the timing.

If it had been runing fine ,the wires would,nt have been crossed, unless you accidently crossed them. While running, pull plug wires one at a time until you find the ones not firing.I always check the points before everything else. Also while running move all wires around to see if that makes a difference.

(reply to post at 06:39:48 06/30/09) I just found the firing order I will check the wires if when putting the new wires I might have crossed one. I thought I might have bumped the dist. too but it was tight. If the wiring is correct I will check that too Thanks]

You need to bring No1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke. Remove No1 plug near the radiator & hold your thumb over the plug hole while someone slowly cranks over the engine until you're at TDC. Note which way the rotor turns.
Your rotor should be at the No1 plug tower. If it is your plug wires need to be in this firing order on the cap 1-2-4-3. The plug wires need to go to the correct plugs. Hal

Putting water to the trees... :) Thanks to all that replied it was as simple as switching #3 wire for #4 must have crossed them when I put the new wires on. Now ,if I can figure out what is wrong with the starter wiring. I can live with that for now. Thanks Again

You need to check for voltage to your starter solenoid when you press the starter button or twist a key. It only feeds voltage to your solenoid when you're making a start. Once you quit pressing the starter button or quit twisting the key start, no more voltage is fed to that terminal on your solenoid. If there's voltage at that terminal when you press the the starter button your solenoid is probably defective. Hal

Thanks for all the help the pump ran great all day. I was getting ready to reposition the gun and the water stopped running by the time I got to the pump it was extra hot but running the pump had stopped I shut it down, the radiator was toast (a hose although looking new was split). When it cooled down I cranked the engine to my suprise it turned over. I need to see what happened to the pump and if the engine is usable.
