Hay Wagon Deck

I am rebuilding a 16ft hay wagon and would like to attach 4x4s 2 or 3 feet apart for 16ft. What is a simple way to attach the 4x4 to the 2-16ft stringers?

Lag bolts would be simple, but you could keep things tight as the wood works over the years by usind bolts and nuts.

at least. I think the rule of thumb is penetrate twice the thinkness of what you are fastening (???). So, maybe 10 inch?

Tweeter,
I have used 1 inch angle iron pieces (about a foot long)then use short lags to lag them into the timbers. I would also suggest that 3 feet is probably too far apart for the cross pieces....especially if they are treated pine
Good luck,

I just built one. I laid 2x8's crosswise right on the stringers. Then bolted a 16 foot 2 inch angle iron flat up against the outside edge. with the other side going down vertically. That gace the outer edge a perfect flat deck, and a good strong vertical steel surface to attach a "cap" 1x6 along the side.
I made up stringers from 2x10's with a sandwich of 3/4 marine plywood between them.

I used 3/8" threaded rod. Bore throught both, counter bore top for nut(I tack nut on top with welder so it would not come loose) Also use big diameter washers, better strength.

I used 1-1/2 inch angle iron 1/4 inch thick with a half inch bolt each way, but I used 2x5 oak for the cross pieces, not 4x4's, and the stringers are 3x7 oak. the size and thickness of the angle iron was probably overkill, but it's what was available at the time. You could probably be fine with 1 inch angle 3/16's thick. Another consideration might be to use two 3/8 inch bolts through the stringers instead of one 1/2 inch bolt. My cross members are 3 feet on center. closer might be better depending on what you plan to use for decking. I will be using 1.5 inch rough cut oak actually 1.5 inches thick. I had to do a little "tweaking" with the stringers as they warped and twisted as they dried. The only other suggestion would be to forget the 4x4's, because they may bow down at the outer ends! BTDT.
