Can't kill poison ivy nut grass

Mornin all!
I know there have been threads about nut grass, but Can't seem to make a dent in the poison ivy. Have tried Roundup and Spectricide at their recommended levels (12oz./gal)
I've even gone heaver at 16 oz / gal, but the nut grass and ESPECIALLY poison ivy look as green as ever, whereas everything else is brown in 6 hours! The concentrates are $expensive$ and it like pouring them down a rabbit hole.
Thought I read where poison ivy was getting more resistant to herbicides, and wondered if any of you where seeing this. Dad says "spray em with gas, and that will kill everything"

i use the 50% concentrate at the recomended mix on the instructions. it usually does it's job within 3 days.

The wife began w/ 50% a week and a half ago, and the ivy just doesn't seem to be affected at all. At 16 oz/ gal, nut grass begins to brown but ivy is still growing strong. I'm just getting frustrated.

Did you put some "sticker" in the mix? or maybe you could call it a surfactant, makes the roundup or what ever stick to the leaves instead of running off. Makes a big difference.

24D will kill broad leaf poison ivy and is cheap
A light rate of diesel fuel sprayed on the leaves will also kill it but probably not politically correct so the three Ses are in order.

This is the first year that I have attempted to spray and control poison ivy so have no previous experience.

I purchased the Monsanto product Roundup Poison Ivy and Tough Brush Killer Plus.

As the data sheet indicates I could notice initial chemical damage within 24 hours. Sure looks like it will control the most of it with just one spraying. I'll be spraying again as I missed some spots. I'll certainly use it again.

When using some foliar micro-fertilizer on garden crops a few years ago it stated the best time for plant uptake was prior to 10 a.m. as the leaf stomata was most receptive before then.

Since you are having problems with kill you might give that a try if you aren't already. If your water has high mineralization you might also want to cut the percentage with some distilled water, reverse osmosis filtered water, etc. Would have to be pretty bad for that to make a difference I would think.

read this on here the other day i tried it.I think John la.
1 pound salt 1 gallon vinager and a little of dish detergent to make it stick works for me

I have used both 2,4D and Preen with good results. One works as well as the other. It is fairly cheap compaired to a woody brush herbicide.

Roundup is a root killer and takes longer to work on things that have large root systems. I might see some yellowing in a few days, but to really work it needs more time. A week is not uncommon.

Pete,
Did you dilute that in water or apply as stated? I tried that also without diluting. It did work quite well but did not go very far. I just poured it through a sprinkler can. Was afraid that mixture might ruin the sprayer. Did you run it through a sprayer?

I'm trying to kill grass and weeds in the driveway. They drive me crazy. I haven't found anything yet that works. Roundup is to expensive. $200 for 2 1/2 gallon.

My experience is that RU kills only the tops, not the roots of poison ivy, so it comes back. I had a good kill with Brush-B-Gone. It didn't come back.

You might try checking the label of a product called Crossbow. Works great for blackberry (Roundup and 2,4D- kills the tops, but not the roots). No idea if it would work for your stuff, but worth a look.

I don't know if it will help the nutgrass problem, but a little ammonium nitrate dissolved in your tank of roundup acts as a foliar fertilizer and will make it take up the roundup faster. For general spraying around barns and such here I use 2 oz. of 41% generic glyphosate per gal. with some 34% nitrogen added in. It works on just about everything, including nutgrass.

Usta use Basagran on nut grass; can't remember if it was yellow or purple; it'll work on one, but not the other, as I recall. Dang this CRS syndrome.........

Brush-b-gone has tryclopyr (spelling?) in it and it works GREAT on broadleaves of all kinds when purchased in bulk and mixed in your tank.

It, like Dicamba is expensive though

When spraying problems like ironweed I mix it in with the 2,4-D to "heat" up the mix, really helps

Roundup makes a special product called "brush and ivy killer" I bought it a few years ago to kill off the poison ivy around my woods. I have heard that a little diesel fuel works when added to the roundup.

I kill poison ivy with roundup just fine. I just about have it erradicated on my property.
However there are seeds/berries that will fall from vines in trees and come up next year.

I kill the vines up trees by cutting them off and brushing on straight roundup on the stubs.

The plants I just spray with a a fairly strong roundup mix with no surficant.

Now if it would just kill those wild cactus....

yes i ran it thru a sprayer one of the wally world poly sprayers and i used it full strength didn't dilute

For nut sedge try Sedgehammer there used to be another called Manage, not sure if its still available. Either way nut sedge is a real B to get rid of, cause if you don't get every sprig, it'll be back like a wasteful government program!

Do you mean with a smaller percentage of active ingredient or do you mean pre-mixed and ready to use?

Tractor Supply Company carries both concentrate and pre-mixed in Monsanto Poison Ivy & Tough Brush Killer Plus.

Always read the label for concentration ratio. Roundup and generic roundup comes in different strengths.

If it is genuine roundup and in a sealed bottle it will have the concentration stated on the bottle no matter where you buy it.

I notice here, roundup and 2,4-d kill this plant, they also kill dandylions because of its large tap root.
Vinegar also kills dandylions if you boil it to increase its acetic acid, so could it be a cheap solution for your problem?? just a thought.

The ivy I wouldn't mind IF would stay at tree bases and against buildings, but the doggone stuff stays low and creeps through the lawn wherever the shade is. The concentrate that I've bought is said to cover 300 sq ft with a hand sprayer. I'm mainly trying to spot kill around trees and out buildings.

2-4D I've not seen it on shelves, but dad still has some from the 60's when he did a lot of spraying, (didn't need licensed or permitted back then)but as I remember when I "painted "cut stumps, it was a thick syrupy mess from a glass gallon jar.

Roundup Poison Ivy and Brush killer works good
for me, but, though grass and weeds start to die
overnight, Poisin Ivy take abot 5 to 6 days to
start shoeing results and about 2 weeks to turn
brown. I think that it takes awhile to work
through the stringy root system.
