Ford 3000 power steering issue

Bought a 72 Ford 3000 about 4 years ago. Had been kept in barn and had only 500 hours on it. It now has about 1500 hrs. I noticed several months ago that the power steering (factory installed) seemed to be somewhat "sluggish" so I changed the filter in the pump. Didn't make much difference. Now it seems to have a "catch" in it as you turn. It just doesn't work smoothly like it did when I first got it. Any ideas?

Sounds to me like you may have some crud in the hydraulic actuator block in the steering column. The block where all 6 hyd lines connect. It's not a bad job. Worst part is you have to pull the center hood and rear cowel to get at it. Fuel tank can stay on the tractor.
When you remove the block be very carful you don't drop all the little pistons, springs and balls that are in it. They will fall on your shoes as you remove it. BTDT
Wash it all out with laquor thinner, buff any rust spots with crocus cloth then reassemble with light oil. Be sure you replace the seal in the top half of the steering column.
Dealer usually stocks them for around $12. That upper seal is a known weak spot in these tractors and will puke oil out from under the steering wheel. Might as well replace it while you're in there.
As for your 3000 in general you might ask questions about it on the Ford Board. You'll find guys here who know those tractors as well as any man alive but you'll likely find more of them over there.
That is a very good model tractor btw.

Thanks for the info ultradog. Now how about coming down to AL and "showing" me how to do it.
And bring some of that MN cool air when you come to replace this 97+ heat we're having.

Seriously, thanks for the help.

Was hot in the 90s earlier this week but after thunderstorms this AM it was a pleasant 75 and partly cloudy most of the day. Got a couple of old pals I haven't seen in years down in your part of the country. Someday I'd like to get back down there - Mobile, Phenix City, Pascagoula.
I know enough not to come in summer...
Good luck
