My older friend has a 91 Explorer that is giving him problems. It cuts out, kind of coughs and sputters some times. Maybe when you step down on it. Sometimes does it at idle at stop light, once in a while he has to restart. Its getting worse and He is now afraid to drive it and can't afford to take it to high priced place.
Think it is V6 4L engine. Any ideas to help?

He has tried injector cleaner and water/deicer stuff. It had sat for a long time before he got it.

Something that old, I'd look closely at the EGR valve. I have a 94 which is pretty much the same. The EGR was leaking on it. On mine the whole valve was really rusted. What you can do is remove it from the upper plenum and block the hole with some gasket paper, reattach it and go for a drive. If it doesn't act up, you found the problem. Don't just eliminate it. The EGR is not just an emissions control device, it's also an economizer. You will loose in town mileage big time if it's not working.

Most common things I have run across . Fuel pressure regulator , pull vac line off it ,if wet or fuel spray out after you turn key on ,it's bad .
Vac modulator in trans , look at the vacuum lines, if they are soft and spongey ,tranny fluid is getting sucked up from modulator , some lines may get so loose they fall off .
Throttle position sensor , replaced a ton of these, can cause all kinds of idle /hesitation problems .
Plugged fuel filter! filter is down on frame rail ,out of sight out of mind !
Bad grounds , check for corrosion along fender grounds rad support , etc .
Dirty injectors , if it has a lot of miles a quality inj service such as motorvac will make a big differance .
Bad Idle air control actuator .
Also ,,as Brian mentioned , bad egr valve .

These motors have a laundry list of pattern failures. don't see too many in shop anymore . We call them "exploders "

Brian is right on the EGR. Look at the DPFE control as it is generally what goes wrong with the EGR valve system.
