JD 3020 pto

How big a task is it to replace the pto clutch in an early model 3020 syncro-range diesel? I am sure my clutch fingers ends are burnt off from what I think is a bad bearing that locked up. The pto just quit working and looking in from the bottom cover I can see the fingers do not touch the pto drive any longer and there is no pressure to the lever. I don't have a concern about splitting the tractor but is there special tools needed for replacing the bearing and clutch fingers? Thanks in advance to everyone for your help and advice. If it is not what you would consider a large job to accomplish I would like to save the $1000 that the dealer told me it would be to open it up and then fix if it is just the bearing and fingers in addition to the cost of the parts. Thanks to all as I read the posts here often and everyone has really helped me save some money as I try to do what I can myself.

Takes a special tool to adjust it before it's put back together; dealer might lend it to you, but I doubt it. I carried a HEAVY piece of cardboard with me and the shop foreman let me trace the outline; carried it home and cut it out. Works fine for an occasional use. I didn't check at the time, but the thing could probably be ordered for a few dollars......

If all that's wrong is the bearing and fingers, it's no big deal. If the PTO or traction clutch are worn out or burned it gets a bit more expensive.

You can get the whole setup re-manned from Deere for some $800.00, all set up and ready to install. All that's needed is to have the flywheel resurfaced to install that kit.

If it IS just the fingers, they are some $20.00 each and, as Thurlow said, you need to borrow or buy a tool to set them. The tools sell for about $50.00 on ebay.

Or, take the flywheel off of the engine, assemble the clutch to the flywheel, then take the assembly to a Deere dealer to have the fingers set.
