Hydraulic cylinder disassembly

A guy brought a hydraulic cylinder into the shop and wants me to replace the seals. The tractor is Ford but the backhoe it's off of?? The one end is welded solid, other end has a screw out nut that holds the seals in. That is out. Next thing is the wiper seal looks like hard nylon or some type plastic. I have put about 8 ton (or close to that) pressure trying to pull the ram out and it's not coming at all. What are the chances there could be a snap ring down below the wiper seal? I was really hoping to get the wiper seal out in one piece but, it doesn't appear that way now.

there may be a small slot at the outside of the end of the cylinder that has a spring steel band that kind of feeds in to hold it together, my crown fork lift is set up that way. the other thing is remove the hydraulic line fitting from that end of the cylinder and see of it comes apart that way. the loader on my m was made by american road equipment and the cylinder uses the pipe fitting to hold the inner sleeve of the cylinder in. took me a while to figure that one out, could not see anything holding the ram in, but came right apart after i took the fitting off.

The screw out nut you took off, was it an internal nut that threaded over the rod gland or an external nut that threaded into the barrel? If it was an internal one that pulls out on the rod gland then try knocking the gland into the cylinder an inch or so and there should be a 3 piece lock assembly you can remove and pull the rod and gland out. If it is an external thread one that threads into the barrel then it should just pull apart. Good luck, Don from Canada

The threads are on the outside of the nut and screw into the barrel. The barrel is threaded on the inside. The next visible thing I can see is the wiper seal. I will look again and tr to bump it into the cylinder. Thanks.

Hi Glenn, I will look for the steel band but, I haven't been able to find anything like that yet. There is no fitting at that end of the cylinder, just a one way cylinder. Must be the weight brings it back closed. Thanks.

Since you say its a one way cyl look in hose port with it collapsed. There should be a groove with snapring by it push ring down in groove then rod will pull out.
