saw an interesting field.....

Hey folks,

Just noticed a field today that has wheet, barley, rye, oats, peas, corn, and something else all growing together and looks to have been seeded like grass (corn was not in rows). Is this a new feed idea for silage or just cut for fresh feed? The guy doing this one is a Bio (organic) farmer that has beef cattle.

It's some unusual person who planted a bunch of old seed to grind up for silage, I guess.

Probably making pig slop.

I'll ask him when I get a chance. He was hoeing in it the other day but I was short on time and didn't ask.

Years ago a mix of two or more grains was called succotash. Oats and wheat, etc. Was used as cattle feed because no elevator would buy the comingled grains, and it was impossible to separate them in a fanning mill.

Hoeing it? How big a field is it and what kind of 'hoe' was he using? I would guess that he was using it for feed, either as silage or direct graze. If he was going to graze it, I don't know why he would bother to hoe it, especially if it was not in rows. It would be interesting to see how things turn out. You have piqued my curiosity, so please keep us informed.
