12 v conversion

I am converting an oliver 66 to 12 v neg ground, and I have a question. Can I use the old ammeter, or do I have to get a voltmeter. I am trying to keep the tractor as original as possible. I know an alternator is not necessary, but I need it to keep up with the lights, as this is a work tractor.

Thanks

If it's working, you can use old ammeter. If you reverse polarity on ignition system ( usually with alternator conversions) then you'll have to reverse leads on back of ammeter. There are a number of good wiring diagrams floating around on this board for various tractors. Check 'em out.

You can get a 12V generator, if you prefer a little originality, thus leaving it positive ground, and no ammeter/coil wire reversal.

If you want to keep it as original as possiable why not use a 12 volt generator off of an Oliver diesel. How many lights do you have on the tractor. Have you checked the amperage draw of the lights?

Sure, you can use the old ammeter, I actually prefer them over a voltmeter, as noted below you have to swap leads if you change battery polarity or she will resd bass ackwards. Assuming its a coil ignition, its leads should also be swapped if you change polarity, that would mean its lil + receives ignition switch voltage while its lil - wires to the distributor for negative ground. You can EITHER add a voltage dropping (12 to 6) external series Ballast Resistor ahead of an old 6 volt coil or else get a new full true 12 volt coil no ballast required.

I have 3 work lights, and the occasional red bullet light. I have not checked the amp draw on the lights, but I do know that the old 6v system would not keep up with them. Do you think that a generator would be able to keep up with my lights?

Thanks
