buying your 1st tractor

Im 16. and im looking at buying my first tractor. Its an oliver 1655 wide front diesal with no over/under/direct. Its got 5000 hours and worn tires that hold air. He wants 4300. Is that a fair price? I am not that great mechanically so could you guys give me some things to check to see if the tractor is ok. Please help.

You're starting kinda too big for your first tractor. You're 16, don't get yourself way in over your head. Size down to an oliver 60 or something.

i really like the tractors from the late 60's and the early 70's. My dad and i would like another row crop tractor. I have limited my list down to an oliver: 1555, 1655, 1550, JD: 3020, 3010, 2520, 2510, MF: 150, 165, 175, White American 60.

Probably one of the best Olivers ever built, the over under delete would slightly lower the value in my opinion but the price seems pretty good. Make an offer that is 5 or 6 hundred low and see if they will negotiate, thats half the fun of tractor buying.

Was this 1655 with no over/under considered a Loader Tractor Special?

A White 2-70 is pretty much the same tractor but maybe not so attractive. The 1655 is pretty much a sharp dog and if you want it go after it. You've got lots of time to both pay for it and learn on, I'm really glad you aren't like some kids your age doing drugs or whatever. I'm all for it Right On guy! Good Luck! CT

I'm 16 too, but I only have the old tractors, (from 1938 to 1949).

Late father-in-law had a couple MF175"s Were good tractors. I have his MF180. Seems to be a good one, does what I ask of it. (And my preference is JD - but you gotta "run what you brung!")

im not sure. It hasnt had a loader on it since he got it. There were 1655's made without the over/under/direct. Just probably not very many of them.

ya we have a massey 1080 which is jus a little bit bigger than a MF 180. Man I love the sound of the perkins on it. I have drove prolly 20 different tractors this summer and the Perkins on the 1080 sounds the best to me. And i have drove some nice ones too ( JD: 4020, 3020, 2520, 8100, 6320, 4320, 5105, MF 251XE, Oliver 1655, 1855, another 1855, Farmall 806) to name a few.

thanks for the support. and ya i know the white 2-70 and oliver 1655 are the same. A MM G750 is also the same. I like the look of the oliver 55 series more. But i like the whites a lot too. Heck i guess i just like all tractors hahaha
