Yesterday I spent spraying. We still couldnt plant the last of the beans but seemed like another day or so and we could get them in. I spent the day spraying corn.

This is some of the corn we planted around may 20. It is looking pretty darn good considering the weather.

Nick and I talked about what to do about the hay. There was a 50 percent chance of rain last night with a couple of clear days after that. If we didnt mow it there was a 100 percent chance we couldnt bale it so... Do you chance it and try or keep waiting?

He mowed the first field of hay.

A overgrown tangled wet mess of alfalfa and grass.

So of course it rained again... seven tenths here and 1.5 inches on other farms.
That meant I had time to check the cows and calves in the pasture so I took some pics after it quit raining this morning.

This is the creek running through the pasture. Running a little faster today because of the almost inch of rain we had last night.

Looking out accross the fields toward the neighbors farm stead.

226 is a good looking calf. One of the later ones to come this spring.

Just a nice morning to sit and enjoy the peace and quiet in the pasture.

This is the last calf that came this spring. A nice heifer calf. Her mom is nosey the cow. She should make a great cow some day!
It was a cloudy sprinkle filled day. Once again we are a few more days from finishing planting and now we have hay down.
Oh well.

You've outdone yourself with these photos of the cows in the field.

You have a beautiful "farm stead".

Be sure to pat Wrigley on the head for me and tell him he's a good dog.

Thanks for the photos.

Hi Bill,
What a beautiful farmstead you have. I love the pasture pictures of all the cattle. I'm jealous. I wish I had that pasture here in Minnesota. Awesome job of taking pictures. Thank you for sharing the wonderful photos with us!

The pasture is not mine. It is pasture we rent and has belonged to the same family since 1836, no one else has ever owned it. They have done a wonderfull job of maintaining and improving the pasture and helping me get into the cattle business.

Nice photos, I am a little bummed out. I never go anywhere without my camera (or so my wife says). Well today I worked in the shop til early afternoon and then went out to help my brother bale hay. Been waiting on the weather to dry and today it finally did. We came down to the outside round next to the fence and my brother went to get another tractor for the rake to kick it out to where we could get it with the baler and rack. I walked up near the shed where the tractors are kept (wondering which one he was going to use) I hear a 2 cylinder fire up and then nearly right away by the sound as it started to move I knew which one. It was the newly aquired MC. It would make a great picture to use to give you guys a little ribbing about it being too wet for haying. I ran back to my truck to grab my camera and wouldn't you know the one time I didn't bring it. Oh well it would have been a picture that would have brought a little humor and lot of comments. Sorry I couldn't share it with you folks. I really enjoy the pictures.

Great pictures, thanks for taking the time to put them on here. Your corn looks great, hope you are able to get your beans in. I wish we could raise a hay crop like that, we usually rake 30' together just to get a windrow. Hope the sunshine comes through and we will take the rain if you have enough.

Great pics and thanks!! I look at your pics and any tension within me is gone!! Keep them coming as you have time.

I love your posts Bill, the ones with the pictures. Keep them coming, and give Wrigley a pat from me in memory of Buddy. I'm sure he'll understand.

Thanks for sharing Bill. Have you considered putting together an anthology of sorts in book form of what it means to be a farmer in the American Midwest in 2009? I think sharing your challenges and joys like you present on this website would be valuable to young people thinking/dreaming about farming. Just a thought.

Is that a JD 1209 Mower, My partner an I just bought one spent a whole adjusting all the setting to make it cut. Works great now. Boy never buy from a Yuppie Farmer.
That Smokie calf has a black nose in a short while he should turn all black, my Limousin cattle do that. Red nose red cow, Black nose black cow.
