Armadillo Holes

I was raking hay over the weekend and hit an armadillo hole. I broke (it had been cracked for a while-unknown to me)the left front spindle and hub. I was moving forward one second, the next my left front tire was laying on the ground, my spindle buried about 6 inches in the dirt, and my left rear wheel still turning. Bad news! The good news is that I found the parts on this website for less than half the price that John Deere had them priced. I ordered on Monday, and they were delivered on Wednesday, saving over $300. A big thanks to Yesterdays Tractors!!!

I have been meaning to ask the question if armadillos cause any damage around a farm. They have recently arrived here in Charleston. I think you answered my question. We have been seeing them near our farm for almost a year but have not seen any damage. What do they eat?

they eat grubs and earthworms. they dig burrows for dens. i have em on some property in arkansas. great way to twist an ankle when you step in a hole. up here in illinos we used to have a lot of groundhogs until the coyotes moved in. they were devils too for diggin tunnels, sure was a wake up when you dropped a front wheel in a hog hole. dang near throw you over the handle bars!!!

They dig holes sometimes as big as a foot across and who knows how deep. I am in SW Arkansas, and they came here from Texas. Back in the old days of tractors without power steering, I have almost broken my wrist more than once when the front wheel went into a hole. They are usually only out at night. A few years ago, one of our good neighbors who moved from Ca. called the game warden on us for shooting after night. We had already contacted him, but the lady worked for a local radio station and caused him so much heat, that he told us to stop hunting them. Now we probably have 50 holes or more in our hay field. A few years ago, we went hauled dirt and filled them all up, but they are back again. You can't even ride a 4 wheeler or drive a truck thru your field without danger of a wreck or tearing something up. My advice to everyone is to kill every armadillo they see. They are also the only animal alive that carries leprosy.

Uh Oh I didn't know You couldn't eatem. We call them "possum on a half shell". LOL
