i cant find it now but several months ago there was a add in the photo ads for a belly mower, as i remember it this was a unit that was designed to have the tractor back over the top of the mower, then hook to the 3 point, thats it, apparently the level front to back was adjusted by the upper link on the 3 point, does anybody have one of these and if so how does it mow? what brand is it?

You may be referring to a Gravely belly mower ("This mower can also be used OUT FRONT Or ON the REAR") that you can either back over or pull over; it then being used as a belly mower and the lift point is by the primary double action cylinder that also is the one and the same cylinder used to lift the 3 point arms on the Tractor rear or the Tractor front attachment kit.
Gravely riders can lift at: Front/Middle/Rear and the lift cylinder does have DOWN pressure and the valve does have a FLOAT position.
These Gravely riders are now out of production but many remain in service.
Modification (to an alternate tractor) would be necessary to use these mowers on any other BRAND.

I had one of those. Made in Texas but I don't remember the brand. No longer made. They had the same type of gearbox that a brush mower would have to turn the pto from horiz to vertical, then belt to the center spindle. Easy to hook up and reliable. But, very limited lift range and scalping is a problem.

Evil is right, the name on the one I had was Continental-Belton. I think the name is a combination of the Company and the city where they were located, Belton, TX._

I just bought one of the old Continental Belton mowers, how do you remove the gear box from the PTO shaft? I bought it on an old junk C and want to move it over to my good C
