Hay makin' in Kentucky??

Is anybody else planning on tryin" to squeeze some hay in this weekend?? Weather has just been horrible. More rain tonight, then dry through Sunday, maybe Monday, but the ground is still awfully wet. I guess it just depends on how well it drys out tomorrow and if Monday is gonna be dry. I"d sure like to cut some tomorrow evening after work, but it doesn"t look to promising. I"ve still got about 30 acres to go for my first cutting. All small squares......

Don't think I'll try any this go around. Round baled some monday and the baler was leaving 2 or 3 inch deep tracks, and that field has been in sod for years. The rain yesterday and today hasn't helped matters any. Too wet to plant soybeans too. Joe

Talking from the buying side, late hay that isn't ruined by rain is worth more than stuff put up on time that molds/burns in storage. We've had perfect weather here with the ground bone, sunny and windy. Half what I need was rolled and is under roof, gotta check on the rest tomorrow. A neighbor that I do my best to support by buying his hay is dragging his feet and hasn't even made arrangements for baling/rolling. Supposed to rain this weekend and he could be stuck with a bunch of wet windrows.

I'm in spencer county (just south of Louisville) I've only gotten 30 of 90 acres cut and baled so far in first cutting. Currently have 5 acres cut and getting rained on (as with many of my neighbors) that we had all planned on getting up Tuesday night because it wasn't supposed to rain until Wednesday night, well it rained on us Tuesday evening and messed us all up.

Raining right now and then only 3 days maybe of dry weather till more rain, which is not near enough time to get this thick grass dry enough to cut, rake and bale.

Probably gonna be early July till I get it all finished and moved into the hay barn.

Picture is of me moving a pair of the first cutting to the barn . This field is close enough to the barn that it is just easier to pick them up as pairs and take to the barn.

Hey Casey,

Here in piedmont NC we have not had good hay making weather either.

Yeah, I'm going to try this weekend also. Have only got up about 17 of 65 acres I have to cut. Lost about 9 acres (700 or more small squares) in about 4 straight days of rain the other week, had to round bale some for cow hay.

I was kicking myself Sunday evening for not cutting that morning. Needless to say I was glad I didn't come Tuesday when it pooring the rain. I'm in the eastern part of the state, about 45 minutes south of Ashland. At best, we're looking at 4 dry days starting tomorrow(but day 4, Monday, is a little iffy). But as wet as the ground is, I just don't we could get the hay cured.

Oh, and I do agree with Dave, late dry hay is better than early wet hay. Several customers start getting anxious and wnat stuff cut no matter what the forcast is. Is hard to make them understand...

They'll be the first to turn their back on you when the stuff is wet. Put up good stuff and you'll have plenty of people wanting it. I'd rather have horse hay cut a little later anyway just before it goes to seed. Gives them something to chew on.

I'm not far from you, in Bullitt County, just across the line from Spencer County. I've got 10 acres of mixed grass cut and baled out of 35. It rained here ALL day. Just now quitting. Supposed to be nice tomorrow, saturday, and then turning back to monsoon season by Sunday night. Same old story. Rain, rain, rain, then turn to drought in July.

Im going to try to get some timothy in small squares. Maybe 5-6 acres. One of my dairy customers likes it for his show heifers. All in all the weather worked ok for me. Two weeks ago I got 100 rolls of alfalfa baled and another 100 rolls of grass hay. It all came up good and is in the dry. Lost a round baler on that and it wont be back until Wed this week so Im just hanging loose. Actually, at one time I was down two round balers, a sqauare baler, one rake, and a tractor. Hope to get everything back by Wed and ready to go. I'm 10 pct finished with first cutting, but almost done with first cut alfalfa. Hope to get all the first cut grass in by the 25th of June so I can start immediately on second cut alfalfa. Right now whats pushing me are the cows. They are normally already on grass hay fields for summer pasture.

I live in SE Okla. We have got about 18" of rain in April and May. I have 150 acres of meadow grass.I plan to cut 40 acres tomorrow(fri). It is supposed to rain here next Tues. I hope to get this hay rolled up Sunday. Roy
