Young son has economics homework that ask what he wants to be and how much he will make kinda ???s.

Without getting too envolved, what are the ins and outs as far as cost for 300 acres of soybeans. This is assuming his equipment and land are paid for.

This is just homework so don't go overboard with the answers.

He really is interested in agriculture and has started to drive the 8n. Says he don't want to be a factory worker like his ole man. I think he might be on to something cause after 27 yrs of working for the big science company I don't know if I'll get what I work all these years for.
Folks will always have to eat but don't know if it'll be for BOMAUSA Farms or he'll have some land of his own.

Thanks if you care to share your experience.

Here is my breakdown for the 09 crop year on soybeans.

Herbicide 2 passes at $13.00 each trip.

Seed at $58.00 an acre.

Fuel I figure 3 gallons an acre.I prepaid at $1.80 a gallon. He can do the math.

Now if the aphids come along that will be another &12.00 an acre for insecticide.

I figure $70.00 an acre for machinery costs. Even though the machinery is paid for it will wear out and have to be replaced. So there is a cost whether it's paid for or not.

Just for his information land cost are about $150.00 an acre.Just like machinery you have to figure a land cost even if it is paid for.

That herbicide was per acre and I forgot that I use about $50.00 per acre of fertilizer as well.

This gives me a total of close to $96,000 to plant 300 acres of beans.

Thanks Gary,

What would the best case scenario return be for bushels per acre? I'll make him look up the market prices to see how much money is to be made or lost.

Oh,and his favorite color is red :>))

Thanks again!!

Thanks again Gary,

I talked to the guy I get the horse fuel from last night and he said about the same thing.

After Matt did all his figuring he said I'm in the negative. He had to add in his house and all bills associated.

We had a little talked about what he had to cut out to turn it around. He decided to turn it in to the teacher just like that so they could start a conversation on how to turn it around. I bet him he would be the only one that lost money. :<))

Thanks again, I really think he learned a good lesson.

ok i guess i need to go back to 6th grade, because if you got 50 bushels an acre at 300 acreas. that is 15000 bushels. isn't beans around 4.50 or so a bushell? 15000 x 4.50 = 67500. so you said it would cost 96000 to plant you would be in the hole?
