I have moisture in my ground about 5 in down under the dry top soil. I planted some pumpkins last week, but the damp ground was kind of hard. The plants are comming up ok. will the roots keep going down after the moisture if the ground is not real soft? I thought about discing another area, but If I do will I lose too much moisture? Stan

Stan,
I've been growing pumpkins for ten years and they have one heck of a root system. They will spread their roots 5-10 ft. So I don't think you'll have anything to worry about. I got mine planted last weekend and I looked to day and they are up. I put a couple of rows in ridges. This way if I have to water them the water will follow the ridge down to the end of the row.

What do you use to keep the weeds out of your pumpking patch?

I don't have much of a problem with weeds. I disced the weeds after the last rain, and if it doesn't rain the weeds don't come up. It never rains in Southern Calif this time of the year. I do have problems with rabbits. Stan
