What's the approximate value of half a beef? Neighbor's trading hay for 1/2 and I'd like to cash rent it. Just tryng to see the value of what they get now. I assume it comes processed.

I would go to the local butcher shop and ask him/her what it would cost to buy one.

Will yours be choice or prime or ??

I rent my fields for a cow and 2 pigs. It works out great for me. I pay for the processing and wrapping only. I of course put the value of the meat on my income taxes.

Steer weight x 85 cents a pound divided by 2.

The value of butchering and wrapping is about 30 cents a pound.

Soooo, if you have a 1200 pound steer around $700 or so.

Here in Western Oregon I get around $800 for 1/2 of an 1100# steer. That would include processing. That price puts me in about the middle of the market.

A couple weeks ago I picked up half a beef that I bought from my sister and her husband. Finish weight was 410 lbs. The Processor charged me $210. My sister wanted $1.20 a lb which I thought was slightly low--would have came to $492. I sent her a check for $530 this morning. Total price for me was $740. Real good meat! They never did tell me what the live weight was, but I'll bet it was around 1200 lbs.

My last 1200# angus beef I sold 1/2 for 3$ lbs and that included processing, which is what a grocery store gets for just hamburger.

I sell my grain-feed holsteins for a 1.75 per # plus they pay for processing. I deliver the steer to the slaughter house and YOU pickup the wrapped beef. I have no problem selling the ten steers I raise a year and the same people come back year after year.
