'95 Sierra tailgate latch - what is servicable ?

The latch on the right doesn't pull enough to release. I can pull on right arm and open with a pliers, so the linkage appears to be sound. Can the linkage or something be adjusted ? Is there another option to fix ?

Are the plastic clips still on the latch? Quite a few of the clips break on one side or the other at the hand latch in the center. No adjustment that I know of.

If I remember my '92 right the linkage had some bends in it that straightened out due to lack of lubrication and like the other fella said the plastic clips broke. Time to take it all apart and fix it right.

Good grief,
Bill

Linkages seem sloppy/loose, but everything looks to be intact from what I can see of the linkage connections to the handle.

It must be worn out.

I hate the new tailgates. The tailgate on my old 80 was bent and beat to heck but still openened and shut like new. No cables to break either cause it had the steel links on it.

On my 92 I took out the plastic ring around the handle so I could get in there. I had replaced the plastic retainers several times and finally gave up on those. Reach in there with a channellock pliers and bend the latch rod/wire around through the attachment hole to form a hook where those plastic retainers are and get rid of those darn things. I had to feed some through with the pliers to take up some slack cause if the latches are out too far the tailgate won't shut without pulling on the handle.

Hate to think what problems I will have in the future on the tailgate of my 09.

Robert NC has it right below.

Had the same problem my 1989, plus the fact the previous owner pulled away from his gooseneck trailer not raised high enough.
