JD 3020 PTO quit

I have an early model JD 3020 that the PTO quit working on. I could not get it to work even with unhooking the linkage and manually engaging the PTO so I do not think it is the linkage from the shift lever. Is there something inside I can't see that may have worked loose? If it is the PTO clutch I was wondering how big a job it would be to replace myself. I know the tractor will need to be split to do but after that is there any major work that requires specialty tools or work that could not be done by someone with average mechanical skills? Also, can anyone give me a ballpark cost for replacing the PTO clutch if that is the problem. This is a syncro-range transmission. Thanks to anyone who responds.

How did this come about... worked one day and not the nest, or began to slip under load and got worse?

Does the lever's action feel normal... is there resistance and then it locks into the engaged position?

Have you adjusted it?

Have you tried BOTH the 540 and 100 RPM stub shafts?

With the engine SHUT OFF, take the inspection plate off of the bottom of the flywheel housing and see what's doing on up there when someone engages the PTO.

(If the TO bearing has failed or the clutch is "toast", there should be quite a bit of debris on that lower cover>)

There is a shear pin that protects the rest of the driveline if needed. I've seen only one that had to be replaced, and that was because the owner encountered a rock while brush cutting. It does require splitting the tractor behind the dash. No special tools are required, but there is a bunch of roller bearings that will fall out. A rubber band will hold those rollers in place while you re-assemble, and don't worry about getting the rubber band back out when done. The oil will dissolve it.

za766,
I'll bet the throw out(actually in) brg wore the ends off of the 3 fingers on pressure plate that apply pressure to pto clutch. Remove bottom inspection cover and look.
