Corn is done for now

Got all of our corn ground in for now, only 16 acres. We ussually plow under 1 or 2 poor hay feilds after 1st crop, but the last 2 winters we've had enough snow to protect the alfalfa from much winter kill.

We could really use another 10-15 acres of corn ground, but we're not sure which feilds if any we would plow under because right now the 1st crop is coming along quite nicely. One or 2 feilds have a poor area in them, but most is looking pretty good yet.

I guess we'll see in about 2 weeks when we cut it down and stuff it in a bag. For now we'll work on getting our Gehl 920 wagon back together, and then I'll pull out the 3000 and sharpen the knives and look it over, and then the haybine. The motor for the spout on the chopper doesn't work. Not sure if it's the wireing or the motor yet, I'll have to try hot wireing the motor.

The Gehl 970 should only need grease, but unfortunatly our Meyers wagon is sidelined still with a busted gear box. Still not sure if we're gonna fix it or find other purposes for it. Probably gonna borrow the neighbors Miller wagons again like we do almost every year so we have a couple more to fill. Then we'll rent the 986 that's down the road and put it on the rented bagger.

I was just thinking of the several fairly dry years that we had here in southern Missouri before the last two wet springs. We've got more grass than we know what to do with and it just keeps growing. Another good dose of rain yesterday and supposed to continue through the middle of the week. I hope that we get decent drying weather for making hay this year. Last year we didn't finish up the first cut until July.

Anyway, as wet as it is there is a silver lining.

Good for you don. I am sitting here looking at the radar and it looks like it will be raining here shortly. Only have 80 acres of corn left to plant but we need a good day of sunshine before it will go. I guess a day of rain will cover up any mistakes we have made planting in the mud this week so what the heck. If we had clear weather today I was going to start spraying and I was going to get somebody working ground for beans. Rain makes grain right?

We don't do corn any more but do know the relief when a patch is done and don't have that concern anymore. There is always another concern to take it's place.

It started raining just a tad almost as soon as I went out to start on Saturday. I managed to get the headlands done and then the sweet corn, and it just got too wet out. It was just a couple drops here & there, but it was enough to make it stick to the tires and soak me on the open 1600.

Went home and it quit right away. Was dry enough to go back out in about 1 1/2 hours but that was enough to screw it up that I had to finish yesterday. Oats is looking pretty good so far.

Brother got his pumpkins done too. He bought a 1 row Covington planter last year for a good price as well as a 2 bottom potatoe hiller. He makes a pass with the hiller and then plants right on the hill it makes. Pretty slick set up once he got rid of the bone head he had trying to help.
