Checking LP fuel tractor

If fuel gauge isn"t working- thump on side of tank from top to bottom, note when sound changes from hollow ringing to thud- this will give rough idea of how full it is with the liquid fuel. (Do NOT open valve and check with lit match). RN

Pour hot water down the side of the tank. It will steam above the liquid level but won't below the top of the liquid.

They also have made thermal strips that can sense the temperature difference between gas and liquid on the side of the tank. Sometimes you can feel it with your hands, better with the back than the palm.

If I'm not sure about how much fuel is in the tank I just fill her up. When it is warm this time of year if you have been working the tractor some you can feel of the tank and it will feel cooler where there is liquid. Sometimes when there is a lot of moisture in the air you can see some condensation to the liquid level. If you have a fuel gage and if it isn't working you might pop the little gage out of the socket and clean it up or get a new one at your LP supplier or forklift company. Done that to one my tractors and to the storage tank and it worked great.

In LP tractors I drove for neighbors there was a round pressure gauge on top of tank just over the side fill pipe and vent area. Some are located at side of tank again close to fill and vent pipes. Another possible location was in a large T fitting for vent pipe. RN

I've seen the frost line on tank occasionally- depends on moisture in air and outside temperature. The hot water check and thermo strips are a good idea. RN

Thanks for the help, I just took it to Agway and filled it they tried to explain to me how thr roto gauge works so I'll play with that. Now I know I shouldn:t run out at the tractor pull tomorrow.
