Ford Transmission PTO????

Can a post hole digger or other stationary implements (generator...etc) be used when a tractor has a transmission driven PTO? The tractor is a 1973 Ford 3400.

Is there any type of conversion kit?

Any feedback on would be appreciated?

Yes, you can use post hole diggers, generators, etc, with a transmission (non-live) PTO. Balers, mower-conditioners, brush hogs, manure spreaders, etc., too. Just not as convienent as live or independant PTO. No cost-effective way to convert to live PTO, but you may want to add an over-running coupler.

Maybe I misunderstand the concept? How? It seems that if pto is "tied" to the trans then how can the pto turn but not the wheels?

The PTO is coupled to the secondary shaft in the transmission and that shaft turns anytime the clutch is engaged, but the drive shaft doesn't turn if the tractor is out of gear.

'Neutral' is also a gear - the pto will spin anytime you choose it & leave the clutch out - including in neutral.

No.
Only 4000 and larger had independent. 3000/3400 had at most a dual clutch/live pto.
3400 is an industrial version of a 3000. Many had no pto or 3 point at all.

sure you can. fords N series work like this, with the trans in nutural and the clutch out the pto will comtinue to provide power check out the N board here these little tractors do have a few shortcommings, but while there limited in horsepower they manage to do some amazing work with them,
