OT Ford transmissions

I have a 1976 F-100 with a 300 6cyl and 3 speed on the column. I was thinking about replacing the transmission with an automatic and was wondering if any of you guys knew what transmissions will bolt up to the 300. I drive this truck to work occasionally and use it to haul light loads from time to time. The 3 spd just wont let you roll on on the interstate and my wife can't drive it. Thanks for your help

Being you all ready have the cluch and linkage I would go with a 4 or 5 speed manual. I have both the 5 speed over drive is of little use to me, but I live in the mountains, if you do a lot of freeway driving might just be the thing.

What 4 spd manuals will bolt up? Will the cross member need to be changed?

Maybe a C4 would be best to try- C6 is for big V8? I replaced overheat 4eod with earlier non computer controled C4 in a "91 E250 van- works good for what I use it for- light hauling, small trailer, country roads. RN

Being you can't change the bell housing like the old days.Just get a trany off another 300. If it was mine I would check at your local bone yard.

My 1979 F 150 has the 300 with a T 18 wide gear ratio behind it (T 19 is basically the same so it should work also). Supposedly the NP 435 was also an option. As for autos I have only heard of the C4 and C6 behind it in pickups.

Ford sold lots of pickups with the 300 6 and overdrive automatics from about 1980 on. If I was considering such a conversion, I would check with a good wrecking yard. They might have everything you need to make it work and might even guarantee the transmission they sell you. The Ford overdrive was pretty good and would probably work very well in the light duty you are describing. Might even up your gas mileage some. Good luck!

Any transmission/bell housing from a 300 six, 240 six, 289/302/351w and 351 Cleveland will bolt up. If you use an overdrive (aod) you will have to taylor the fuel curve at cruise speed because trucks of that era tend to be lean and you will get surging. A c-6 3 speed would be easiest and most inexpensive. Dave

I have made the swap on a few fords of that vintage,,,, I will not do one less I have the complete Donner truck,,, every thing is different on FORDS,,, you also will need the steering column ,,, a manual column will not swap to a power steering gear box are vice a versa

just swapped a 400 out for a 390 in a 77 F-350,,, bout the only thing I could use off the 400 was the power steering pump,,, even the brackets for the motor mounts that bolt to the chassis had to B swapped

I have a what I think is a C6 that is mounted to a 400. I was not sure whether the c6 would work with the 300. My brother in law comes from a ford family and has several 1970's ford parts trucks that were factory auto. so I have access to just about everything I need to make the swap. Thanks for the help.

You can swap a c4 or ac6 either. If you are only going to drive and pull light loads I would use the c4 as it will get better mileage. You will need the tranny lines the crossmember some form of a trans cooler the column the drive shafts a vacuum line and you will need to change the speedo gear on cable and you will need a fly wheel and a starter or change the nose cone the one you have. I know there are a few things I left out.Your best bet is to find a doner truck. If you converted it to on the floor stick could your wife drive it then? If so, I would change the gears in the rear end. Anymore questions, just ask. Made this swap many times.

Should have added that in my exp. putting auto trany behind a 6 cyd. in a pickup makes it one big dog [no power] might get by with it in a car, but you were talking pickup. I would not even have an auto with any thing less than a v-8. But thats just me. Good luck to you.

One thang about the C6 (BTDT) the output shaft that drives the speed-O gear is different are lets say they do not use the same output shaft in all C6 trans,,, get the wrong out put shaft and you will never B able to calibrate the speedometer

Unlike some trans the splines are machined on to the output rear shaft,,, its possible a good trans shop are junk yard could tell ya what C6 you would need

More I think about it the carb will need to changed also for (most autos need a throttle pressure rod),,, more than likely the one you have does not have a provision for it.

A 80's 300 fuel injected engine with a AOD would make for a nice swap (lot of work but worth it) still need a parts truck

I never cared for the carburated 300 6's,,, The EFI 300 is EZ'er than most think to work on. The EFI 300 6 models with a standard trans with overdrive were rite good on gas.

I agree. It seems that there are very few parts that will interchange on a Ford. Like you said, if you're going to do an engine swap, you want the entire donor vehicle sitting handy. I swapped a 390 into a '71 that came with a 240. Even the foot accelerator pedal assembly had to be swapped out.

There is more than one bolt pattern on a c6.C6 was used on 390s and 460s.C4 was used on 6 cylinders and 289/302 some 351s.You can find an old Fordomatic or c6 maybe that will bolt up,but it will be way easier to find a c4 or overdrive which is a c4 with overdrive.Look in a junkyard for a pickup that has a 6 cylinder and automatic transmission, preferably a 300 six cylinder, then see whats different. You need the driveshaft and transmission mount, gear off of the speedometer cable, carburetor, shift linkage, steering column, radiator, and probably the rear end too.Might be better off looking for a truck with automatic transmission and blown motor and put your motor in that.

Reading all of the replies, I see lots of inaccuracies. The C6 was built with 3 engine bolt patterns. The 6 bolt pattern 260, 289, 302, 351C, 351W. The 240-300 6cyl is the same as the 6 bolt small V8. The FE engine pattern. And the 335-385 series (351M-400M, 429 460). If I remember correctly, the MEL family engines use the FE style. The early 221,260, 289 engines had a unique 5 bolt pattern through about 1963.
Internally the C6 was built in 2 configurations. Light duty and heavy duty. The difference being fewer clutch plates in the forward drum.
The speedo is calibrated by the color of the drive gear on the cable.
Ford still had the C6 as an option through the early 90's in trucks.
The Ford truck transmission that would slip out of Park and back over things on their own was the FMX. For what ever reason, they did not use a spring loaded park pawl.
