With 37 years in they can replace you for half of what they were paying you. That happens a lot. But keep in mind if they replace you they will only get half the work done. They will pay in production. It just could be they are in a bind also. We all are heading for very bad times. I think the worst is yet to come. Hang in there.

Sure tough to hear about these situations, but there are a lot in the same boat. Maximum unemployment compensation (at least in this state) is up to over 15 bucks an hour, and lasts about forever, if thats any consolation.

Good luck to you- what kind of work did you do there?

Don't feel it's you fault, BTDT. As soon as you look at it as an opportunity, rather than a punishment in life the better off you will be.

After a period of where you are at now, I even took a lesser paying job that I enjoyed as a semi retirement at age 55 I kept that job till early retirement at 62 without the aggravation that someone was always looking over you shoulder.

Will pray for you and yours, and pray for the healing for your Wife that she may not need the wheelchair.

My condolences to you. My prayers to you and your family.

In January, my wife's company laid off about 150 computer programmer jobs. Her job (of over 20 years) was one of them cut.
Her American company had no problem keeping on the employees that live in.......Pakistan.
These were the exact same people that my wife trained.
I can see a company laying off workers if there is no work. It's unthinkable to lay off workers just because they can find somebody cheaper and when there are no layoffs in management.
I'm off my soapbox now.
Good luck with finding a new job.

I am so sorry!

I wish I could help, but distance is probably an issue. Even though it is tough to do, let friends know, usually they are your best source of immediate help.

I know it is terribly unjust! The squinty eyed small minded bean counters make sure the experienced help is off the payroll and then they bring in a string of "temps" who don't know crap about anything and have absolutely Zero loyalty. But for a short time, the monthly balance sheet looks better and the bean counter gets some kind of bonus...and it goes on 'till the company is destroyed or files for bankrupcy.

Again, I'm sorry for you and will be thinking of you, your wife, and family. My best wishes!

Agree with El Toro 100%. See an atty ASAP, LIKE TOMORROW!

Make sure you find out how this will affect any benefits and especially your pension, if any.

If they are consistently releasing long term employees, you may have a strong case. That has happened before until a terminated employee got wise to it and filed lawsuit. Cost the company major $$$$.

Wishing you the best. Keep us posted. You have our support.

So I guess you go to the highest priced store you can find to shop not buy the same item for less at another store? A job is just that a job with no guarantee except you'll be paid for work already done.If you want security start your own company.

Welcome to the real world my calves are bringing
40 cents a pound less than they did last year.So what? No one or company 'owes' you a job.Forget the complaints, lawsuits etc even if they take you back do you really want to work there?Pound the beat find another job or better yet start your own enterprise where you are the head knocker.

Good luck. You have a lot of company. But I would get with that lawyer before you go see the "vise president" . I was being screwed over years ago, and when I got a lawyer, everything smoothed right out.

Wait a munite, you have been up some pretty step slopes before, and you made it. Those rough things make ya tougher after the madness.

Companies will do anything now, so don't take it personaly--you are just a number.

It certianly ticks a person off, but we all become better at understanding other folks problems, once we get kicked in the head like you just did.

I have few words to make you feel better right now, and any words will seem hollow for a spell. As long as you know there is a little sunshine up there hiding behind the clouds, you will be ok.

After that many years, it has to be extra hard, so be carefull if you get feeling real bad--there is help out there, and sadness is only normal in your situation.

Sorry I don't have a answer, but certianly wish you the best. Try to keep the chin up for the wifes sake also. (I know without you saying so you have done that one before) If you can work any job for 37 years without quiting, ya must have alot of good things inside ya.

Good Luck

I thought I had a few freirnds out there ... WOW ...
I guess it just show you there are friends out there that is willing to share information ...or JUST a COMFORT word or two...

THANK YOU for being there for us [ my wife & myself ] ...

I know how your feeling right now in 2007 lost my job the same way after 28 years.I would talk to an attorney and find out your options.
Just remember though everybodies expendable.
Took me a long time to relize that and then I got a new job.
Good luck I wish you the best.

by all means get a lawyer.
mrs 730 got shafted by principal in school district where she taught.
a family friend and i both told her get a lawyer she didn't.
the principal was pulling lots of bs on mrs 730 i think it was done with knowledge of school board to force mrs 730 to leave(she had 30 in that school) .
mrs 730 was either 5 or 6 on seniority list within a year all 6 were gone only 1 retired because she wanted. saved the school at least $250,000.

I certainly am sorry to hear that. I truly am. I don't know the circumstances that led to it or your remedies and won't try to pretend that I do, but I am sorry to hear it for both yourself and your wife and hope for the best and will cross my fingers. I'm just sorry to hear it.

You say that your wife is in a wheel chair. Take a moment to kneel next to her, kiss her on the forehead, and with a smile, look her in the eyes and tell her that you love her, always did and always will. What will that do for you? I don't know, but she hurts too and for a moment...

Good luck and may God bless.

Mark,

I got laid off on Feb 20th this year. I just started a new job yesterday at a local salvage yard. Yes I never thought I would work at a junk yard but it's by no means a small operation. It's called LKQ with 9300 employees nation wide.

No time card to punch just put your finger on the little computer eye and it reads your fingerprint. They try to dismantle 40 vehicles a week. Unbelievable!! The people are very nice also. I took the job because no one else was hiring.

I looked at being laid off as an oppurtunity instead of a set back. It gave me some time to really think about what I would like to do. For now though I took the job to keep things stable.

There's no good job! We don't get what we want but what we need!!

Don't have anything special to say, but feel for a lot of folk out there, bad things are happening to good people.

All the best to you & the wife.

By all means see if you can make an age discrimination case. What kind of work do you do, what are your skills, and where are you? Maybe someone here knows of something available. You are not alone by any means.

The best of luck to you and your wife in you appeal, got to stand up for your rights, 37 yrs deserves alot more consideration then what you got!! Funny how employers expect dedication and repect but sure dont know how to give it out!!

Some employers turn out, when you strip everything else away, to be hard-core jerks. I don't know your circumstances, but I pray for folks like you [and me]. Last job I had was really secure...until they saw what my wife's pre-existing medical conditions were doing to their group insurance rates. Then I was let go because "business is slow"...only to have my position filled by a younger single person within a month.

I hope things work out well for you. Folks who have dependents who require insurance coverage are apparently going to be looked upon as liabilities by businesses looking at anything and everything to improve the bottom line...no matter how well the employee does his/her job. Welcome to the 21st Century. Hope it gets better eventually.

[And I won't even mention how some folks will believe that you'd probably still have your job if you'd only turned off your TV...won't mention it at all.]

Sorry about your job loss. There is a life ahead and most likely a better job. Don't fail to take advantage of every chance you get for help. Good luck. Be praying for you.

I know what you are going through right now.. It is absolute HELL!!,, I got let go earlier this year also with 37 years.. They brought in a New Female to help. After training her for about 5 months on the job, She turned me in for nnalert Harrasment!! Several of my Female friends has gone to the Mgt, but it falls on deaf ears.

I've had a lot of folks praying for me, and I can see a little bit of light at the end of this tunnel.

If this ends in the way I think it might. Then I will be better off than before, it will have been turned into a great blessing..

Keep the faith!!! I know it can be hard to do at times, but dont give up..

Losing a job is always tough regardless of the circumstances.

Hopefully better days are ahead for you and your family.

Hang in there and don't give up.

Sorry to hear your news. Here's hoping for a turn-around of some sort for you. As others have already mentioned, talk to an attorney before you have that appeal meeting.

I was fired from my job because of being old and not selling enough. Of course that is not the official reason. Have heard that they have hired eight techs trying to replace me. All have quit or been fired. Don't give up. Something will come along.

Hang in there, buddy...there's a lot of us that are just a day away from where you are. Stay strong- a country boy can survive!
You're in my prayers...so many of us men identify ourselves by our jobs that it's a real tough deal
