Anybody got any idea on how to get about 10 more horsepower out of a VH4D Wisconsin engine? Its rated at 30hp and I need between 35-40hp for what I"m gonna use it for.

Considering that the 154 cubic inch displacement VG4D is rated at 37 hp with almost 50% more displacement (the VH4D has 108 cid), I think the VH4D must be fairly well developed. You could probably get five more hp with some port work, a cam, bigger carb, and higher compression but ten would get expensive.

It's a flat head so adding compression brings on detonation sooner than what a quench wedge head overhead valve engine would. Port flow is limited as well.
If an engine swap is out of the question.......maybe, just maybe a Whipple supercharger from a Buick 3800 would work? You could leave the engine internals alone and just bolt the blower on a plate between the existing manifold and carb.
The whipple heats the airful mixture less than a roots blower and has better throttle response than a turbo. 3-4lbs boost would do.
The whipple unit has a bypass door which allows idle and part throttle operation without wasting HP driving the blower.
Water injection after the blower would control detonation.
It would work as long as IF the engine never detonates. The addition of a large oil cooler intended for an automatic truck towing a trailer would be required. There are simple plates that bolt under the oil filter to provide handy connections.

Messed with them for 30+ years anything you do to gain that hp. is going to result in considerable shorter engine life. Why not change
out to larger latter model engine...

The VG4D is rated 37HP @ 2400 RPM; the VH4D is 30 HP @ 2800 RPM. The extra RPM's explains some of it.
They made a W4-1770 which was 35 HP @ 3000 RPM, it was the same physical size as the VH4D. Good luck finding one.

That's my concern also. These things tend to damage themselves from overheating anyway.

Thanks for the replies. Was already thinking about trying to find a VG4D but thought if there was something simple to modify the VH4D I have I might have tried it.
