I have a 1978 Ford model 3600 diesel. This spring while getting it ready to operate for the first time I notice that the radiator was empty. I filled it but had water leaking out somewhere behind the starter. Is there a freeze plug in that area that could be the source of the leak? If so, how do I get the starter off. The two outside bolts are accesible but the one or two on the inside appear to be very difficult to remove. Can anyone help me out?

I don't think removing the starter is going to help you find the leak, but here's how I do it, others may disagree but I have replaced my share of them in the last 30 years.Unhook battery cables at battery. Turn off the fuel at the tank, unhook the fuel lines going into and out of the filter base, remove the two bolts holding the base to the bracket and remove the base and filters. Unhook wires at solenoid. Use a 3/8 in drive rachet, deep well socket and 6 in extension, go behind the solenoid and block and take the bolt out ,easy as pie. Put everything back and bleed filters. There is a freeze plug in the back of the head and another behind the flywheel in the block that is a likely cause of the leak, could also be the head gasket, replaced a few dozen of them also.

Was there good anti-freeze in there last fall with both freeze protection AND corrosion protection?
Old antifreeze doesn't have corrosion protection.

There's probaly a freeze plug behind the flywheel
or flex plate that's leaking. Tranny would probably needed to be pulled plus the flywheel.

Ok, it appears that it might not be necessary to pull the starter to find the source of my leak. You all need to help me out here. I am fairly mechanically inclined but I am not real knowledgable about tractors. As I said, the water is coming from behind the starter. It appears from your responses that there is a freeze plug behind the flywheel and in back of the head. Can I see either of these freeze plugs without removing anything to get an idea which one might be the problem?
