more old terms

we have weeds in this part of the world with odd names. Can you guess why they are called what they are called? One is a vine with stickers, called GOATHEAD vine another is called BINDWEED ,not a weed but a type of cactus ,that my dad called BEARGRASS

Bindweed will definately bind up and choke down soybeans to the point they can't grow. It will also wrap up tight on a combine reel and make you create a few new words.

in nw al. we have a small thorn covered sapling called "the devil's walking stick", a summer weed called dog fennel or summer savory and several weeds in the garden that i have a few choice names for.

Forgot to include bull nettle. Don"t know why its called this, but if you ever get into it, you will use the other have of the term that is frequently used with bull. It has a very nasty sting which causes redness, welts and sometimes itching.

Its also a perennial with a huge, deep root which makes it hard to get rid of.

I think beargrass is related to the cactus family, we always hung meat with it in the smokehouse (grandpa insisted). That's in North Florida.

The goathead is called that because the seed ,when seperated ,has two thorns and looks like a minature goats head. The bindweed ,willspread fast and choke out most cropsand ras to be controled with chemicals,or intence hand hoeing. We call a sand burr, a sandburr

We have a weed Dad called fertilizer weed. It had a lot of very small black seeds. It grew only about 5 in high. It smalled like crap when it was damp. stan

Might as well include the blue weed in that area. It goes fight along with the johnson grass.
