Alternator over charging the battery

The alternator has three small wires, which wire would I be looking for on this? The alternator is new just replaced about two weeks ago.

I'm guessing that it's a Delco alt?
Are the terminals marked 1 and 2 or F and S (I think).
The former is an internally regulated 10si. The latter is the older, externally regulated 10DN.
If it's a 10DN then you have a regulator mounted somewhere else on the tractor and the reg may be bad.
The 10si is internally regulated... and the only real thing you need do is insure that the #2 terminal is securely connected to the BAT terminal so that it properly senses output voltage. Other than that, DO NOT ever reverse the polarity (hook the cable up backwards) or that will fry the regulator. One of those terminal wires touching ground could also be the source of your problems....
Likely, at this point you will need another alt if it's a 10si. If it's a 10DN you need a reg.

Once I had a battery that always overcharged.
We figued it must have been partially shorting
out between the cells. Battery eventually went
dead and it was replaced. That seemed to
solve the problem (just a thought)

Have your alternator tested it's probably the regulator if an internal regulator is used or one mounted on the tractor could the problem. Hal

If you just replaced the alternator, you may have got a bad one. See if the place you bought it at will warranty it.

There can be several reasons.

The regulator can be out of adjustment (mechanical) or just bad

The battery can have a low cell

There can be (a) bad connections in the wiring harness

Don't forget the ground path. It is VERY important that the ground frame of the REGULATOR be at or close to the exact potential of the BATTERY negative terminal.

Additionally, depending on where the "sense" voltage comes from, the positive path wiring can cause the same effect
