In this part of the world there was a plow called a GO DEVIL any one know what it was? Also a weed called a DIVILS CLAW. Lots of funny names Anyone know what they were? Can you think of other odd names that used to be used//////////

My Dad had a pull type weed cutter called a clclone. It was a tool with several blades mounted underneath. It was probably 8 ft wide, and would go deep enough to cut the weeds when pulled with his tractor. It was not home made.Haven't seen one since. stan

well we have the weed around here in central nm, i dont know what its latin name is but it kind of looks like a rams head with the horns curling in a half circle to the front the size of most of them is just right so if you happen to step on one it will flip up and attach itself to your leg and eat on your leg untill you remove it,

As I recall the Go-"Devil was like a sled with a seat and some discs on the back for cultivating.
I think it would do 2 rows?

We have both down here in Australia. Go-devils have gangs of disks used to form raised beds for row crops. About 20 years ago I spent a year in your fine state, and used go-devils a lot. They were call hippers I think. A devil claw is a huge weed not unlike a pumpkin plant. The seed pod has two big horns which grabs onto things like legs and tines thus spreading the seed. As for other names for some reason we call planters "combines" and harvesters "headers". My favorite is "hungry boards". They are the extensions you put on grain bins to get more grain in.

We have a weed around here commonly called "Itch Weed"~~~ flat leaf, the size of a coffee cup you get into it it burns like Icy-Hot and itches like crazy for few hours to a day.

Sounds like the goathead weed we have at our place in California. Little seed pods are about 1/4 inch across at most?

If I remember correctly, devils claw was the seed pod from a milk weed. It was about 4 or 5 inches long, about an inch thick at the base, tapered to a point and usually curled as it tapered. If you broke one open, silky stuff would come out.

In Arizona the "Teddy Bear" Cholla Cactus is one dangerous "weed".Come to think of it, most every thing in Nature here either pricks, sticks, burns, bites, or stings.

nettles around here get round balls the seeds have sharp prongs , and kinda arrow shaped. that attach to your clothes and it seems so hard to remove, then another even worse thing is what we call burrs they stay in ball form and seem to attack you from a distance while hunting. <}:>)

Har-ber Village Museum has or at least had several Go Devil implements on display. In a tray of slides I have a photo of them. Would take some pretty good digging to find the right box so unless you insist I'll not go through them.

You'll know you have devils claw growing by the pungent odor they put off. Pretty strong and unusual.

Young devils claw pods can be pickled and eaten.
Mom used to put some up every year so that we could offer visitors the fuzzy pickles which we told them were pickled mice. After all the pod resembled the body of a mouse with a tail.

I really need to go into the countryside and get a mature pod so that I can start some on my property so that I too can have some pickled mice.
Har ber VIllage, still Jones Truck Line?

That's it, glennster. I didn't remember what the plant looked like, but remembered the pods. Its been over 40 yrs. since I've seen one.

I grew up in Wichita Falls, Tx and we had them there. Don't think I've ever seen one in e. tx.

We have two that my Dad had. Ran on skids with a pair of disc gangs on the back. Staddled the row and had a shield on the back.
