need to replace tach or tractormeter

Hi everyone:
The tach on my JD 1630 has the rpm's above, hourmeter in the middle, and the associated speeds of the eight gears below. Is this what is called a tractormeter? I just got a brutal quote from the ag shop, so am wondering if aftermarket (maybe even what YTmag store has) is the same thing.
Any ideas? I hate not knowing where my engine rpm's are - hard to know when you're overtaxing the engine (tach has never worked since I bought).

thanks
Jason

I was taught to listen to the engine. It sounds different under load. I have several tractors with a worn-out tach.

We"ve had excellent results getting them repaired by a speedometer shop. Usually they say there was no mechanical failure; just needed a good (internal) cleaning. It may be much less than a new one from the dealer and can save you the grief we hear on this site about the new ones made in China that may last a day or a week, or be incredibly inaccurate.
