O/T - the grass is coming up

This spring James and I have spent a boat load of $, time and effort working on improvements to the hayfield.

The w/e of April 25/26 we finished the dirt work at the hayfield and seeded those areas with Cheyenne II berumuda seed. Approx. $800 just in seed.

Then the rain started. It has rained and stormed several times a week since we planted the seed. I really thought we had lost at least 75% of it. Since the seed is about the size of pepper, if it gets covered any deeper the 1/4 inch, the seed won't come up.

I had been dreading going to the hayfield to check on the grass because I thought the rain had washed the majority of it away. We finally went over to the hayfield Saturday afternoon and checked the areas we had planted. I was very excited to see that we only had maybe a 25% washout. Where the areas didn't get washed out, the grass was coming up nicely, about 3/8 tall.

I was thrilled! Now, just wish we had taken the camera. I'll get some pics this weekend and post them.

What a pleasant surprise.

HAPPY for you. Wish we could get any kind of precipitation here in the high desert of so cal. we had 10 inches of snow [quite unexpected] just before Xmas and thats been it,really disappointing. even no April showers I know the creek wont rise and if the well holds out we can be plenty thankful. I know the Good Lord would say "if you wanted rain, should have stayed in NJ" More Later CC

Earlier this year, virtually the entire state of Tx was under some degree of drought. North central and north east Tx are no longer in drought conditions. We"ve got more rain than the land, creeks, rivers can handle.

Remmber last August? We wanted to establish Alfalfa in a field that was in Bermuda. We Burned down with Roundup and seeded with 18 pounds of W-L seed @6.50 a pound. NO RAIN. Started pumping water and pumped untill Nov. We had the stand. Shut down irrigation to eliminate freezing. Did one irrigation after danger of freezing in spring. Then it started raining. Alfalfa is hip high and saw a few buds (no Blossoms). Want to cut but they say RAIN for next week. Going to apply perservative in swather. We had to spray once for aphids. After baling it will sprayed for weed and then start pumping.
Yes, it costs but those old cows will milk. Wish this cutting could go into silage.
