I have to replace the underground wire on my invisible dog fence. The first one was installed by the company.Anyone ever done there own install and how did you bury the wire.I have about 900' of wire and really don't want to dig it by hand. Also can you use a heavier gauge wire.?

Yes we installed our own wire. We ran out and went to ace hardware and they recommended a wire which was a little bigger and said that was what others were using.

I had a two row AC notill planter at the time and I just pulled it around the yard with my son standing on the one row so it would slice thru the sod deeper then we laid the wire in it and let it go.

The invisible fence worked for about a year and we abandoned the idea even after I ordered a higher voltage shocker for big dogs. We have a lab collie mix and she is 52lbs. She learned if she ran thru the fence it wouldn't shock her as bad. So I cut a hole in the pole barn and built a fence outside the shed so she could stay in the shed yet go out to the pen. The shed is 40 x 60 and the outside pen is 20 x 40. She gets some exercise but is so happy to see us when we let her out after we get home from work.

I told my son if he pulled the wire out of the ground he could have the money from the copper. We he tried to pull up the wire but the grass roots have grown around it and it just kept breaking so he quit.

I had to after hit by lightning, just used edger and put it down about 2-3 inches. Just ran edger and then used paint stick to push wire down, with in couple of weeks grass roots fill it in, Mark

I put some in for my parents.I used a 3pt 2 bottom plow,I tilted it up with the top link so when I lowered it the first plow just cut about 3in.then after I put the wire down,I just fliped the sod back over it.

I know a guy and have seen where others have made a plow to fit one the 3pt hitch of a tractor for this. They made I frame out 2" square tube'n and then welded an old NH3 knife to the back of it. Had a small chunk of small round stock up by the top link hook up to put the spool on and ran the wire down the tube. Stuck it in the ground about 4" and drove slow.

Kinda alot of work for something you hope to only use one time but it could pay off if you have to do 900'.

Good luck.

Try Again !!

John,
I have a 130lb. Rotty/Doberman mix and he respect's the shock collar.Has never run through it.

My wife bought an invisable fence for her parents dog. I didn't see it but she installed in with no wire. Just locate the controller in the house and it allows so many feet radius in the yard. I did the one with wire at home years ago by welding a pipe with a slight bend at the bottom behind a old jd subsoiler. Then just drive over it and viola!

Pitch the light wire that came with it and use only 14 gauge wire! Freeze and thaw will break the light wire. I uses a lawn edger, cut down about 2 inches, pushed wire in with a stick...worked fine. My 80 pound lab does not cross the underground wire!! Cmore
