This is the first year we are mowing without a contract. We use to get 25-30 an acre. I am using ford 5000, 4610, 4000 with woods 10 ft and 6ft brush hog. There is a guy in my area charging 40 an hour. My dad has mowed for 40+ yrs and said he has never charged by the hour but by the acre. He will eyeball it or measure it out with measuring wheel and use a little math. I was thinking 60-75 hr because the 5000 about 70 hp. Which is better? $40.00 an hr whats he mowing with a cub with a 4ft on it

I generally charge 70/h for tractors in your 5000's class and I don't think that's overly expensive either.
On the other hand, you could do some math yourself. You must know how many acres you can mow per hour. You know what you want per acre.... It seems to me that if you cut more than 2-2.5 acres per hour on an hourly rate you'll be shorting yourself. Surely you can cut more than that per hour with a 10' mower?

For my own part I'd sooner work by the hour. That way, it takes whatever time it takes. I get paid for what I do. If somebody has a mess they want dealt with and it takes a lot of time... that's their problem. If somebody has a bunch of little pieces scattered out over 10 miles, they pay for wasting my time.
It's very simple. When I turn the key, the clock starts. When I shut it off, the clock stops. If you don't like that, call someone else...

The company we used to mow for already had the acres and lots mapped so it made it easy. So now I am going mobil with truck and trailer. I cant fit my 10ft on the trailer so when I travel I think I am going to charge by the hr. If its something local where I can drive the tractor and take the 10ft it will be by the acre.

Prices vary with region. In my area, the going rate for a 65/70hp tractor/10' mower is about $65 an hour. A few people still mow "per acre" here. Going rate is $15 to $17 an acre, which works out as BETTER (more profitable) than $65/hr with that size mower. Most customers want hourly rates nowdays.

I charge $55/hr for 45hp/6' mower, $$60/hr 60hp/7' or 8' mower, $65/hr for 70hp/10' mower, and $125/hr 95hp/15' mower.

Thats the same as me, some people don't like paying the travel time to get to their place, I tell them they can split it if they find someone else who needs mowing done nearby.

I was charging 50$/hr for a 6 ft'er, wasn't quite enough. Some of the fields were rough and took a long time, also took a lot out of me.
