Dodge Starter Question..

'01 Dodge Diesel, manual trans, has gotten where I have to sometimes turn the key several times, to activate the starter.. Spins fast and starts fine, once it spins. I ruled out the clutch switch, batteries are almost new with clean connections.. I want to fix it, before it strands me.. Seems like it might be a bad ign switch, or starter relay. Any past history of similar problem on these trucks? TIA

When I worked for a Dodge dealer in the '90s, we had a lot of problems with the Denso starters. The solenoid would go bad and cause intermittent no cranks.

You probably have starter contacts out. Remove the starter (some times the starter bolts are very tight) and take the cover off the solenoid. Take the plunger out and there are two copper contacts you can change. Take then to a good auto parts store and match them up. Replace the plunger too.

yep the starter relay can give you fits some time . i cornsiter changing the whole starter if it has a bunch of miles clocked

Son has a 96 starter was giving him trouble lie you. Had it rebuilt it lasted for a while. It got to acting up so had it rebuilt again. He was going on a long haul with a load of Show Cattle. He was a little suspicious of it so had it checked and rebuilt. Sure enough he got stranded in Illinois Only starter available was at the Cummings dealer. That was five yrs ago and he just had a new one put on.

Remove starter, smooth and clean the solenoid plunger, replace 2 starter contacts with heavier duty ones available from Peterbuilt. Mine cost
$2.00 from small automotive electrical shop, but I haven"t needed them yet. The starters have a reputation of going a million miles if you don"t let the solenoid contacts burn and drop the voltage available to the starter. My 93 D350 work truck has 304K on it, starter contacts may have
been replaced before I bought it, but still look
like they were recently installed.

This has happened a couple of times with the starter on my V-6 Dakota. I remove the starter and build the contacts up with Phos-Copper welding rod.

those starters are big$$$ to buy at a parts store. It is a gear reduction starter and the motor rarely gives trouble. The contacts are a different story they are essentially a set of points and will eventually burn out local rebuilder replaces them checks the overall condition for around $30-$40. find a starter rebuilder and have them take a look.

You ain't kidding they will be tight! When I replaced the contacts in my starter I couldn't get a good hold on the wrench when removing the top bolt (as I remember). Broke a 10mm 12point open end wrench. Then after I got a different wrench, I put a 2x4 and floor jack under the wrench and jacked until the bolt came loose. Found the only good way to get the starter bolts loose was from the bottom.
The contacts and plunger cost under $20 and took about a half an hour to change out...once you got the starter bolts loose!
