whens the latest i can plant a hayfield

I live in southeastern wi,had only a small window to plant 10 acres so far. The next field is a mostly a clay field. I'll be planting some orchard grass, timitthy grass brome grass, and some alfafa, and putting some rye on the hills to get established right away. Some people say may first but i'am not sure? Thanks steve

Talk to the farm service office for your area. As an uninformed opinion I think the grasses should be fine, good luck geting in the fields.

Unfortunately, you can't tell if its too late until after you plant it- because it depends on whether you get enough moisture after planting to get it established. If fields are still marginally too wet to work, I'd go ahead and plant when you can and hope summer doesn't come too soon. Grain, beans, corn etc. are date sensitive because they have to have enough time to make a crop- but grass will grow any old time, as long as it has enough moisture.

The "rule of thumb" about 3 states south of you is seed can be planted/sowed in most cases in any month that has the letter "r" in it. That leaves out May for us on the average.

What you need is cool and damp afyter you plant it for a time.

So, it depends on the year.....

Often the 1st week of May will still work - but it gets closer & closer to when it isn't perfect any more.

Is a fall seeding an option for you?
