Truck Flatbeds

Hello,

I have a '89 GMC 2500 4x4 that I have been trying to get rid of, and with no luck, I think I will sell my '04 2500 and just keep the '89 (too many vehicles). Long story short, I was thinking of buying a flatbed for it. I have always wanted one because I think they would be real handy around the farm. The box on the truck is excellent with no rust and a newer tailgate, so I hope it would be worth around $7-800. My question is, what kind is the best "bang for the buck?" I have been looking hard at Hillsboro steel flat beds. I would like to have an aluminum, but I don"t know if it is worth it. The truck is an '89, but with less than 100,000 miles and a brand new 350 in it, so I hope to have it a while yet. Do you guys have any other preferences or experiences?

Thank you,

Iowa Farmer

Probably need one with some storage compartments as I think it would be difficult to drive around with stuff on the flat and not roll or slide off.

Last'un we had wuz one I built; my Dad bought a new '82 one-ton Dodge cab and chassis.....4 speed/4-wheel drive/360. I built the bed, framed with 4 inch angle/diamond plate bed; rounded the corners, rather than squaring them off. Had a 'trap door' for the frame-mounted goose-neck hitch. He had a 400 bu. Howle grain trailer he pulled with it, 'though usually loaded to about 325 bu. I highly recommend building your own.

I've always thought an aluminum flatbed would hurt you in the winter 'cause it's so light...no weight for traction. No experience, just always been my thinkin' on the subject.

i have a midwest 12 foot flatbed with stock racks it has a wood floor and a steel crossmember every 12 inches, i just replaced the wood, i bought it new in 1983 and its seen hard use since day 1 its held up great [ it also dumps] its on a 1983 chevy c30.the truck and bed was purchased new and i dont intend to get rid of it , im going to repower it in a year or 2 and repaint it too i figure the old girl will last me another 27 years, until im too old to drive, that way

Iowa, Kill 2 birds with one stone!!! If you handle round bales any, at all!! Get a Dew Eze bale bed. You need to be sitting down to hear the price. But it will out last at least 2 to 3 trucks. well worth the price. Maybe, Go get you a HPJ paper and look in the trucks for sale section and get one that is allready set up. OH,,,,HPJ-- High Plains Journal out of Dodge City Ks
Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.
