farmall m and running baler

I am thinking of getting a farmall m to run my JD 24 t baler. Is this a good setup? I currently don"t have a PTO shaft for the baler so would I need one with an overrunning clutch or can I just run it with one of those after market overrunning clutches that fit on the PTO shaft of the tractor.

Thanks

The M is a great tractor but for the money an Oliver 88 would do a better job running a baler. On over-running clutch won't help an M run a baler any better.

the old timers always talked about the misery involved with trying to run a PTO driven baler with a tractor that doesn't have live PTO. My opinion is to get a tractor with live pto and as many speed options as possible.

Will if the baler doesn't have one. I welded the clutch up tight on an old Ford baler and ran it that way with an M. Worked fine you just have to rake your hay to suit your baler and ground speed.

Will be easier with a tractor with live power and even a hi low transmission.

I have to agree and Oliver would do you far better then an M ever will. Oliver has live PTO and them 6 cylinders love working a baler. Any of the Olivers from the 77 up will handle one real well BTDT so I know. I had a 14T baler a few years ago and the 77 I have played with it and that was even with a big trailer on behind the baler

M has enough power so it's ok, tho if you plan on baling a lot a tractor with a live/independent pto would be a _lot_ easier to bale with. My IHC 300 with independent pto/ 10 speed with the TA is a much nicer baler tractor, even if it has a tad less hp than an M.

The pto shaft - huh? Most balers have a special shaft, not a universal farm supply shaft, so you might pay as much for the shaft as you did for the baler.... The baler should have an over-running clutch built into it; they have a pretty good flywheel that stores up to 50 hp, and _need_ that sort of free-wheeling or something is going to bust.

Oliver super 77 and a large New Holland baler 78 i think was our set up for years and years. Made 3 to 4 cuttings of alfalfa on about 60 acres. Allways had enough power in the heaviest hay ED

I ran my MF 124, which I think is about the same size as a 24t, behind my M last summer. Never a problem. Makes her work in a heavy crop. Gotta be quick to kick er out of gear from time to time. They Sounds Great!

I agree with some of these other guys.
25 years ago I spent the better part of 3 years on an M.
The M was reliable, and I understand it was a good machine for its day, but an Oliver 88 is superior to it any way you can think of.

Instead of a M, buy a 300/350 or a 400/450. They have live PTO and have nearly as much or more power than an M while generally selling for the same price. The 300/350 will be a lot easier on fuel than the M/400/450.

Farmall Hs baled plenty of hay when I was younger and the M will do it better. My nh 68 has its own over running clutch.I bale hay with a Ford 640, the experts say its to small but Ive baled with it for 22 years.

You can get an Allis WD or WD45, either will have plenty of power, live pto (via the hand clutch), for an inexpensive tractor. Parts are still easy to find too.
