8 volt instead of 12 volt on cub/super a

i asked if i could use a cub cadet generator to make a 12 volt on my cub and super a, that will not work thx for the answer. i read someone suggested an 8 volt battery and leave everything the same. how would you charge it as a 6 volt, and jumping 6 or 12? thx pheel

8 volt battery's are a band aid fix at best on any tractor. Either stay with the 6 volts which works well and has for decades or go with 12 volts and be done with it. 8 volt battery's are trouble from the get go. Light will burn out faster and a genny will not keep it charged if it is 6 volts. Plus you can not buy a battery charger that will charge it

Forget the 8 volt battery. It's only a "band aid" fix as old suggests.

Instead spend the $ on new PROPERLY SIZED battery cables, and if needed a starter rebuild. Your tractors will give you better service and cost less over the long haul.

OLD, read the owners/shop manual on your tractors, it will state that the light bulds will handle 6 or 8 volts. as for charging 8 volt battery just set the generator out put up a couple of amps.i charge my 8 volts with a standard 6 volt charger.

Guess your one of the few that likes 8 volt battery as I said they are band aid fixes for other problems. Also a 6 volt charger will not charge an 8 volt battery up to a full charge since unless there is something wrong with it it should only put out a little bit over 7 volts which is a volt short for full charge

Yes you can go to a 8v they will work for your tractor very well. But first get 1ga cables and check the batt you have now and maybe the starter needs new brushes or even a bendix. Like the other posts say the 8v is realy a band aid for your problem. Same way all the trouble of going to 12v. Dont need to worry about your bulbs as they are rated for 6-8v.

thx for all the advise, considering my major lack of knowledge, i think i should stick with the best 6 volt i can buy and new heavy cables. i noticed yesterday i have the original braided copper ground cable, cool but it just can't work good. thx pheel

If you stay with 6 volt, finding the correct battery cable pre-made will be difficult. I always go to a welding shop and buy HEAVY welding cable to make 6 volt cables. The cable is high BUT if you us it and make GOOD end you should be OK.

Bulbs will lose 75% of their rated life because you need 9.3 to 9.6 volts to charge an 8 volt battery.Small 6v sealed beams cost 14.00 bucks each.

It takes 9.3 to 9.6 volts to charge an 8 volt battery.Bulbs are best at 7.3 volts max.You can expect a 75% loss of bulb life when you run over 7.3 volts.Good luck charging a battery at a lower voltage than its rated for.
